In the Fate/Zero series, Gilgamesh is summoned as an archer-class servant and proves to be incredibly formidable. Very few are able to match him in battle. In the Fate Grand Order series, Gilgamesh is depicted as a divine king in ancient Babylonia, possessing a range of powers and strengths. His numerous formidable abilities make it a significant challenge to defeat him, and many question which servants would have the capability to achieve such a feat.
Who Is Gilgamesh?
Gilgamesh, the protagonist of the Fate Grand Order series, is a unique being who bridges the gap between the declining gods and the emerging humans. He is the offspring of Lugalbanda, an esteemed king of Uruk, and Rimat-Ninsun, the goddess associated with untamed bovines. Ruling over the ancient Mesopotamian city-state of Uruk, Gilgamesh played a significant role in connecting these two races.
The title bestowed upon Gilgamesh, King of Heroes, holds a deeper meaning. It symbolizes his status as humanity's oldest and most influential hero, serving as the archetype for all subsequent heroes and mythological figures. Thanks to his heritage as a demi-god, born from the fusion of mortal and divine, Gilgamesh possesses a unique combination of qualities and abilities.
What Makes Gilgamesh So Strong?
As the King of Heroes, Gilgamesh is undeniably formidable. His numerous powers and abilities surpass those of many other servants. The primary factor that sets Gilgamesh apart from the rest is his possession of the originals of all the Noble Phantasms. Among his various Noble Phantasms, the Gate of Babylon grants him unrestricted access to all the world's treasures. With this vast arsenal, Gilgamesh simply needs to exploit the weaknesses of his adversaries. Since all heroic spirits have vulnerabilities in their lifetime, Gilgamesh can easily identify a suitable Noble Phantasm capable of defeating the servant he confronts. The most potent among Gilgamesh's Noble Phantasms is EA. By utilizing EA's most formidable attack, Enuma Elish, Gilgamesh can effortlessly annihilate anything that stands in his way.
Are There Servants Capable Of Defeating Gilgamesh?
Dubbed as the King of Heroes and possessing an unrivaled might among heroic spirits, Gilgamesh's supremacy raises queries about the potential of other servants to defeat him. Gilgamesh derives his overwhelming power from his multitude of Noble Phantasms. However, in terms of physical prowess, he falls short compared to Berserkers. This exposition indicates that despite Gilgamesh's immense strength, there exists the possibility of overpowering him in various aspects.
During the events of Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited Blade Works, Gilgamesh engaged in a fierce battle with Emiya Shirou, a skilled human mage. Initially, Gilgamesh had the upper hand, but as the confrontation progressed, Emiya managed to achieve victory. He skillfully severed Gilgamesh's hand, preventing him from activating EA. Interestingly, Gilgamesh possessed the ability to defeat Shirou effortlessly if only he had utilized EA from the beginning. However, due to his laid-back demeanor, Gilgamesh always underestimated his opponents and refrained from employing EA against them, considering them unworthy. Unfortunately for him, this tendency often led to his downfall as his adversaries seized the opportunity to overpower him before he ultimately unleashed his true power. This demonstrates that even mighty servants like Gilgamesh can be defeated under the right circumstances.
Which Servants Can Beat Gilgamesh?
Enkidu is undoubtedly the servant with the highest chance of defeating the King of Heroes. Prior to his death and transformation into a heroic spirit, Gilgamesh considered Enkidu his rival. Enkidu was shaped by Aruru, the goddess of creation, from a clod of earth using her Noble Phantasm, Age of Babylon. With this ability, Enkidu can create weapons of various kinds from clay sourced from the ground. Just like Gilgamesh, Enkidu possesses the powerful Noble Phantasm, Enuma Elish, which allows him to transform into a divine construct capable of unleashing an immense amount of energy.
Other contenders who have a shot at defeating Gilgamesh are Jeanne d’Arc, Karna, Goetia, and King Arthur. Karna and Goetia possess significant divinity, with Karna being the son of the Sun god Surya in Indian mythology. Karna has the ability to tap into the power of the sun itself, making him a formidable offensive force. Goetia, on the other hand, is renowned as the King of Magecraft. One of his Noble Phantasms grants him the power to unleash countless beams of light capable of obliterating humanity. Additionally, Goetia possesses an otherworldly Noble Phantasm that renders him immortal within its realm.
Servants like Jeanne d’Arc and King Arthur may face greater challenges in confronting Gilgamesh as they rely more on physical prowess rather than magic. However, their capabilities should not be underestimated. In one of the alternate paths of Fate/Stay Night, Saber (King Arthur) achieved victory over Gilgamesh, thwarting his employment of Enuma Elish, his ultimate attack.
