According to recent research conducted by Durham University in the United Kingdom, the placement of plants or books behind you during video meetings can greatly enhance the trust you inspire in others. The study examined the influence of individuals' choice of Zoom background on first impressions and the judgments made about them. The findings of this research were published in the journal Plos One on Wednesday.
The team utilized 72 photos featuring 36 adults from a photo database. Each individual was captured in both a happy and neutral expression. These images were then superimposed onto different virtual backgrounds and framed with a Zoom border to replicate the ambiance of a video conference call.
For the study, six distinct backgrounds were chosen and categorized as follows: home (living room), blurred home, bookcase, plants, blank wall, and a novelty option consisting of a walrus positioned in front of an iceberg.

Afterwards, 167 individuals, ranging in age from 19 to 68, were surveyed online regarding the perceived trustworthiness and competence of the individuals shown in each image.
The authors of the study said that faces appearing on the plants and bookcase background were consistently rated as the most trustworthy and competent, whereas the home and novelty backgrounds received lower trustworthiness and competence ratings. Paddy Ross, the research lead and associate professor of psychology at Durham University, expressed his surprise at the strength of the responses.
The new business suit
According to our analysis of more than 160 individuals, we discovered that responses indicating trustworthiness and competence were notably higher when the background consisted of plants and bookcases. In contrast, we observed that the living room and novelty backgrounds elicited the poorest responses. After analyzing the findings, he expressed his opinion, stating that people are aware of how others function. Although not everyone has a designated home office, there is still a certain perception of unseriousness when it comes to using a home or novelty background.
It gives the impression that one hasn't put much thought into their professional image, making them appear less competent compared to someone who can nurture plants or someone with a bookcase, symbolizing their dedication to self-improvement.
Ross believes that choosing a well-thought-out video call background has become the modern equivalent of dressing in a professional business suit for an interview. He emphasized that rather than pondering one's attire and appearance, the attention is now shifted towards creating an appealing backdrop in the virtual environment.

Zoom's massive 'overnight success' actually took nine years
Another important factor, however, was the persons demeanor in each shot.
"We found that generally smiling makes you look more trustworthy and competent, no matter what the background," he said.
Overall, women inspired more trust, the study found.
The researchers noted that female faces were perceived as highly trustworthy and competent, irrespective of the context in which they were presented. Moving forward, the team intends to conduct future studies utilizing authentic simulated video calls instead of static images.
"We are in the process of producing authentic Zoom videos featuring individuals during the initial stages of a job interview. Our intention is to modify the background and delve beyond first impressions, seeking insights into more significant considerations.
Should our findings demonstrate its impact on hiring decisions, our efforts could greatly assist individuals in maximizing their job prospects."
