Highlights
Strength and power play a significant role in One-Punch Man, with heroes and villains ranked in varying degrees of strength.
Monsters are classified into different disaster levels, which are categorized from Wolf to God, depending on the danger they pose to civilians and heroes. The topmost level, Disaster Level God, encompasses the most formidable characters in the series, which may include the mysterious God and potentially Garou.
One-Punch Man emphasizes the crucial role of strength and power in a hero's arsenal. It showcases a diverse range of characters, from weak individuals who are virtually powerless to heroes who can potentially shatter reality. These characters are ranked based on their varying degrees of strength. While the series emphasizes that overwhelming strength is not necessary to be a hero, having an appropriate amount of power equips one better for facing enemies.
This standard of varying power applies not only to the heroes but also to the villains in One-Punch Man. The series categorizes all monsters into five levels known as "Disaster Levels". Similar to the heroes, monsters can range from posing a threat to individuals or a group to having the ability to impact reality itself. These levels are officially divided into Wolf, Tiger, Demon, Dragon, and God. Let's explore each of these categories further!
Disaster Level Wolf
The Disaster Level Wolf is categorized as the weakest, consisting of monsters that only pose a threat to civilians when they are alone or in small groups. These monsters lack complexity and are relatively easy to eliminate. For the C-Class heroes, they serve as a weekly requirement to maintain their membership in the Hero Association. The C-Class is the largest and weakest hero class in the Association.
Considering this, there are a total of 390 heroes in the C-Class, with each of them responsible for defeating a certain number of monsters every week. This emphasizes the insignificance of the Wolf Level monsters. While some may be slightly stronger, they do not pose a real danger to more skilled heroes. Examples of monsters in this level include the Messenger of the Seafolk, Tongue Stretcher, and Piggy Bancon.
Disaster Level Tiger
Moving up from Wolf, Disaster Level Tiger is often overlooked by both fans of the show and the show itself. These monsters are officially described as being capable of easily overpowering civilians and lower-tier heroes. They pose a significant threat to a large group of people and require higher-tier heroes, mainly those from the B-Class, to defeat. In some cases, they may even require the strength of an A-Class hero or two.
One Punch Man has showcased a few Disaster Level Tiger monsters, each displaying varying levels of strength. It is important not to underestimate them. For example, Kombu Infinity, categorized as Disaster Level Tiger, was able to incapacitate multiple B-Class heroes. This demonstrates that while Disaster Levels are generally aligned with their corresponding hero classes, there are instances where stronger heroes are needed to defeat certain monsters. Some notable monsters in this category include Crablante, Marshal Gorilla, and Rhino Wrestler.
Disaster Level Demon
We have a category of monsters known as Disaster Level Demon. These are the big hitters in the series, capable of posing a threat to an entire city and its people. It's important to note that even S-Class heroes have been shown to struggle against many Demon-Level threats, making heroes ranked below B-Class essentially useless. While it is recommended to pair A-Class heroes with Demon Level monsters, it's worth mentioning that a single A-Class hero may not be sufficient to defeat them, with the exception of Amai Mask.
The key to overcoming these threats lies in teamwork, as demonstrated in season 2 when the Demon Level monster, Do-S, managed to subjugate multiple B-Class heroes. Only through teamwork did Fubuki and the others gain an advantage, until Tatsumaki single-handedly turned the tide in their favor. Demon Level threats like Deep Sea King and Mosquito Girl possess immense strength, capable of holding their own against some lower-ranked S-Class characters. Both of them gave Genos a tough time, and Deep Sea King even managed to defeat Puri Puri Prisoner. Notable monsters in this category include Deep Sea King, Beast King, and Armored Gorilla.
Disaster Level Dragon
Dragon Level Disaster is a classification for the most formidable monsters in the series. One Punch Man acknowledges these monsters as a significant threat to multiple cities and their populations. Prior to the Monster Association arc, these powerful monsters were rare sightings, requiring the intervention of S-Class heroes to defeat them. Even lower-ranking S-Class heroes were not capable of dealing with them alone, as shown when Melzargard faced off against four S-Class heroes, including the third-ranked hero, Bang.
During the Monster Association arc, all the Dragon Level threats emerged, posing a global danger. Under the leadership of Psykos and Monster King Orochi, the entire hero association struggled to effectively combat the main roster of the Monster Association. Heroes in classes A, B, and C were rendered mostly useless and confined to dealing with weaker minions and rescuing civilians trapped in the chaos.
Unofficial Disaster Level
Dragon Level threats are renowned for displaying unparalleled feats within the entire series. A remarkable example is the epic clash between the Fully Monsterized Garou and Platinum Sperm, where their lightning-fast movements surpassed the speed of light, leaving magnificent constellations etched across the celestial canvas. Additionally, the incredible fusion of Psykos and Orochi possessed the incredible ability to cleave through the Earth's crust. Notable Dragon Level threats consist of Psykorochi, Monster Garou, Boros, and Homeless Emperor.Although not officially recognized as a Disaster Level in the series, there exist a few monsters that lack a proper classification. This is due to their incomprehensible power, which was hinted at in the manga with a panel displaying 'Disaster Level: ?????' next to them. While not an official designation, it is widely accepted among fans that these monsters surpass even those in the Dragon Level in terms of power. Despite not falling within the highest Disaster Level, it is commonly believed that these creatures still pose a significant threat to humanity. Examples of such monsters include the Sage Centipede and Platinum Sperm.
Disaster Level God
Disaster Level God represents the highest tier in the monster categorization system in One Punch Man. While we have not encountered any official enemies fitting into this category yet, it is reasonable to believe that there is currently only one character who embodies this level. That character is the enigmatic God of One Punch Man, who remains shrouded in mystery and is undeniably the most formidable entity in the world. This deduction is supported by the fact that God granted Garou a fraction of his own power, enabling Garou to briefly match Saitama, the immensely powerful protagonist.
Although God's true identity can only be speculated, it is safe to assume that he will ultimately serve as the main antagonist whom Saitama and his allies will eventually confront in the series' climax. Another character who potentially falls into this category is Cosmic Fear Mode Garou, as he was virtually untouchable by anyone except Blast and Saitama himself, demonstrating a power level surpassing anything witnessed thus far in the series. This power allowed him to unlock his all-powerful Saitama Mode, granting him parity with the mightiest being in the entire universe, albeit unable to keep pace with Saitama's unprecedented growth during their battle.
God and possibly Garou are the only characters in One Punch Man deserving of being in this category, which has not been officially recognized by the Hero Association's classification of Monster Disaster Levels. To put the immense power of this category into perspective, it can be said that if Saitama were evil, he would belong to this category.
