The 81st Golden Globes will open the 2024 awards season on CBS in January, following controversy over diversity at the awards show. NBC aired the 2023 Globes, while the 2022 show was not televised. The ceremony faced turmoil when a 2021 Los Angeles Times report revealed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which is responsible for the Golden Globes, had no Black members. This led to stars and studios boycotting the show in 2022.
The HFPA committed to expanding membership in May 2022, with an emphasis on recruiting Black members and forming a committee of racially and ethnically diverse members to advise the Board and oversee organizational reform. After the organization's dissolution, Dick Clark Productions, known for producing various awards shows, has acquired the show.
“We are thrilled to partner with CBS to host the Golden Globes and honor 81 years of prestigious award shows,” stated Jay Penske, CEO, Chairman, and Founder of Penske Media and owner of Dick Clark Productions. “With a remarkable 30-year dedication to the Grammys, CBS has played a crucial role in their enduring success. In CBS, we have found the perfect collaborator who appreciates the significance of live entertainment programming and whose multi-platform distribution model aligns with the preferences of today's global audiences.”

Two new categories are being added: the Golden Globe for best performance in stand-up comedy on television and a Golden Globe for cinematic and box office achievement, given to the highest-earning or most widely seen blockbusters that have also demonstrated artistic excellence.
Meryl Streep holds the record for the most awards in the history of the Golden Globes, with eight wins and 32 nominations. Her role as a supporting actress in the Hulu comedy series Only Murders in the Building, alongside Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, may earn her another nomination.
