Netflix now hosts a collection of movies from the Sniper franchise. However, how many films does the series consist of? Here's a comprehensive chronological breakdown of all the movies in the franchise. Sniper scenes have delivered some of the most intense, top-notch (and at times, unbelievable) moments in cinema, such as the church tower duel in Saving Private Ryan, the city-wide whistling bullet in Wanted, Will Smith taking out a terrorist on a high-speed train in Gemini Man, and the chilling opening of Jack Reacher.
The appeal of being a skilled marksman from a distance has been the basis of entire video games, and movies are no exception. This is where the Sniper franchise comes into play.
Three decades since the release of its first movie, the series has regained popularity after Netflix obtained and promoted several installments. As a result, viewers are interested in learning more about the remaining movies. Here's what you should know.
How many Sniper movies are there?
There are 10 movies in the Sniper franchise.
In 1993, the series began with Sniper, starring Tom Berenger as Master Gunnery Sergeant Tom Beckett. It didn't make a big impact at the box office, earning only $19 million worldwide, but it stood out from other action movies of the '80s with its more serious tone. While the first movie only has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 38%, Roger Ebert praised its cool competence and skillful execution, although he also noted the film's casual attitude towards its heroes being murderers.
It became the unlikely launchpad for a long-running franchise, returning with Sniper 2 in 2002, the first of several direct-to-DVD sequels.
Sniper movies in order
Below, you’ll find the complete list of every movie in the Sniper series:
Sniper (1993)
Sniper 2 (2002)
Sniper 3 (2004)
Sniper: Reloaded (2011)
Sniper: Legacy (2014)
Sniper: Ghost Shooter (2016)
Sniper: Ultimate Kill (2017)
Sniper: Assassin’s End (2020)
Sniper: Rogue Mission (2022)
Sniper: G.R.I.T. – Global Response and Intelligence Team (2023)
Berenger’s Beckett has appeared in all films except for Reloaded, which introduced Chad Michael Collins’ character Brandon as his son, as well as Ghost Shooter, Rogue Mission, and G.R.I.T.
During a previous interview with MovieWeb, the original star was asked if he ever imagined returning to the character after so much time had passed. "Absolutely not. I never even considered it. In the original script, I get shot by Billy Zane to prevent further torture, but they changed the ending. Maybe they thought about it at the time or just preferred a happy ending, who knows. I was a bit disappointed because I thought the original ending was great. I liked the idea of being killed to prevent torture. And now, here we are. I guess there are five of them now."
Sony Pictures
In a recent interview with CBR, Collins was questioned about his long-standing involvement in the franchise, which dates back over a decade. "The selfish answer is I am an actor, and I love to work. If they are kind enough to include me in another one, I jump at the chance," he explained.
Playing Brandon Beckett in my sixth movie has been a great opportunity to breathe new life into a character that has evolved from a baby-faced soldier to a world-class sniper. Now, he's a Special Ops fighter focused on humanitarian efforts, touching on issues like sex trafficking and corruption at the highest levels. It's a fun direction for the franchise.
We are uncertain about the release of Sniper 11, but we will provide updates as soon as new information becomes available. Meanwhile, you can watch Sniper: Ghost Shooter, Sniper: Ultimate Kill, Sniper: Assassin’s End, Sniper: Rogue Mission, and Sniper: G.R.I.T. on Netflix. As a passionate fan of the Sniper franchise, I am thrilled to see that Netflix now hosts a collection of these action-packed films. The series has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1993 with the original Sniper movie starring Tom Berenger. While the first movie may not have made a significant impact at the box office, it stood out with its serious tone and skillful execution, setting the stage for a long-running franchise.
The subsequent sequels, including Sniper 2, Sniper 3, Sniper: Reloaded, Sniper: Legacy, Sniper: Ghost Shooter, Sniper: Ultimate Kill, Sniper: Assassin's End, Sniper: Rogue Mission, and the latest installment, Sniper: G.R.I.T. – Global Response and Intelligence Team, have kept fans entertained with their intense sniper action and engaging storylines. It's great to see that the franchise has continued to evolve, with Chad Michael Collins taking over the mantle of Brandon Beckett, the son of Tom Berenger's character, and bringing new life to the series.
