What Is a MOBI File?
The .MOBI file extension is commonly used for storing eBooks. While it was originally created for the Mobipocket Reader format, it has been adopted by various other eBook readers. In 2005, Amazon acquired Mobipocket, and in 2011, they discontinued the use of the MOBI format.A MOBI file is optimized for mobile or eReader devices, offering a compact size and capabilities such as bookmarks, notes, corrections, and JavaScript support. Additionally, the file may include DRM or copyright protection to prevent unauthorized copying and viewing.
The Kindle formats currently in use (AZW3, KF8, and KFX) are derived from MOBI and are proprietary formats specifically for Kindle devices. Interestingly, you can still directly open files in MOBI format on your Kindle, but you need to send them to your device beforehand.
Despite being technically deprecated, MOBI files are still relatively common.
How Do I Open a MOBI File?
As MOBI is an eBook format, numerous free desktop eReader programs, such as Calibre, FBReader, Mobipocket Reader, or Mobi File Reader, are compatible with opening and viewing them.
Once you have downloaded and installed any of the free applications, opening your MOBI files becomes a straightforward process. In this example, we will demonstrate using Calibre, although most eReaders should operate in a similar manner.
For Calibre, all you have to do is click on the "Add Books" button, and then choose one of the options shown in the image below.
How Do I Convert MOBI to Another Format?
Converting MOBI files into another format requires specific software, similar to other file formats. Attempting to change the file extension alone may result in a damaged and nonfunctional file.
Calibre not only serves as an eReader but also provides a convenient conversion tool, capable of transforming your eBooks into 16 diverse formats. To begin the conversion process, simply choose the desired book and click on the "Convert Books" button located at the top of the interface. In order to illustrate this, let's take a sample extract from Alice in Wonderland.
Click "Heuristic Processing" on the left, select your output format (EPUB in this example) in the top right corner, then click "OK" to convert the MOBI file to an EPUB.
If you prefer not to install a third-party application for file conversion, there are several excellent online converters available that support popular formats such as ePUB, PDF, FB2, and LRF. This is a fast and convenient option that eliminates the need to download and install software. Some popular free online file conversion sites include DocsPal, Convertio, ConvertFiles, and Zamzar.
Just head to one of those websites, upload your file, pick the new format you want, and click the convert button.
From there, the software takes care of everything and will provide you with a link or send you an email with the converted file to download.
