Highlights
Lords of the Fallen sets itself apart with its assortment of distinctive consumable items, including ammunition pouches, briostones, lucky paws, and other invaluable resources. These items are essential for conquering demanding circumstances.
Ammunition pouches and satchels offer a convenient way to replenish ammo, allowing players to engage in ranged combat and assist their co-op allies by providing throwable items.
By equipping charmed paws, players can greatly enhance their item discovery, resulting in a higher chance of obtaining rare weapons, armor sets, and materials. Additionally, manastone clusters are vital for spellcasting and healing, particularly during the initial phases of the game.
Lords of the Fallen faces the inevitable comparison to other Soulslike games, but it possesses several unique aspects that set it apart. A notable distinction lies in its Consumable Items. This game's difficulty and deliberate immersion in various aspects necessitate the use of every collected Consumable Item to navigate challenging situations with ease. Therefore, it is essential for players to be equipped with specific Consumable Items while exploring Mournstead.
Ammunition Pouches & Ammunition Satchels
Let's start with the topic of Ammunition in Lords of the Fallen. The game offers a strong emphasis on ranged combat, which can be surprisingly powerful. Players have access to various options for ranged attacks, including Spells of the Radiant, Infernal, and Umbral types, as well as Crossbow Bolts, Arrows from Bows, and throwable items.
While the non-magical ranged options do not consume mana, they do rely on a different resource meter. This meter represents the player's stock of ammunition and replaces the mana meter when using any of these ranged options.
In terms of ammo, Ammunition Pouches and Satchels serve as refill items that players can use during combat. These items are essential for replenishing high-damage Throwables like the Enhanced Lump Hammer. Additionally, in co-op gameplay, players can use Throwables like the Enhanced Radiantburst Parchment to both damage enemies and heal each other, making them a valuable tool for keeping each other alive.
Briostones, Briostone Pairs, & Briostone Trios
Briostones are simple healing items that gradually restore a small amount of health over time. They can be compared to Lifegems in Dark Souls 2 or Blood Root in Remnant 2. Although the healing effect is relatively minimal, it can accumulate quickly when combined with other HP-regen items or spells, especially when using a Briostone Trio item.
While they may not be the best choice for saving a player's life during a boss fight, they are useful when exploring and running out of Sanguinarix Charges. Additionally, if players find themselves capable of dodging most of a boss's attacks except for one or two, using a Briostone during a lull can provide passive healing whenever those challenging moves land.
Lucky Paws & Charmed Paws
Charmed Paws (and the weaker variant, Lucky Paws) function similarly to Item Discovery-boosting items found in games like Souls (e.g., Symbol of Avarice Helmet in Dark Souls or Silver-Pickled Fowl Foot in Elden Ring). However, Charmed Paws in Lords of the Fallen significantly enhance Item Discovery compared to these items in other games.
The exact extent of the boost is unclear, but the effect of Charmed Paws feels like a guaranteed 100 percent drop rate. Moreover, this enhancement is not limited by time; it remains active until the player's death while in Umbral. In Lords of the Fallen, gathering various weapons, armor sets, items, and materials can be challenging due to their low drop rates. Therefore, Charmed Paws greatly facilitate the collection process.
Small, Regular, & Large Manastone Clusters
Ammunition Pouches and Satchels are incredibly powerful and allow players to throw an endless supply of grenades, hammers, and javelins. Similarly, Manastone Clusters are essential for any character wanting to focus on spells and sorceries. In Lords of the Fallen, the unique functionality of Vestige Seedlings, which are planted in Umbral Flowerbeds, can be a game-changer. However, players often find themselves lacking Sanguinarix Charges and in dire need of long-range damage or healing options to reach the nearest Vestige. This struggle becomes even more challenging in NG+. Initially, players have limited healing methods, relying heavily on their Sanguinarix, which can easily be depleted while dealing with the formidable Ardent Penitents in Pilgrim's Perch. Therefore, Manastones not only allow players to use magic for long-range attacks but also help them maintain optimal health by utilizing healing spells (although healing spells are mostly found in the Radiant magic category).
Umbral Vertebrae
When starting their journey in Lords of the Fallen, players typically do not rely on the Umbral Lamp's Soulflay mechanic. However, as time goes on, they will gradually recognize the usefulness of this mechanic, despite the sluggish and awkward animation.
Soulflaying proves to be a convenient method to disrupt formidable enemies, lure opponents off cliffs, or pull bothersome foes towards the player. Even during boss fights, Soulflaying often serves a purpose. Therefore, by keeping an Umbral Vertebrae readily available, players can eliminate the need to frantically use Soul Siphon in the midst of a challenging boss battle or other intense situations to quickly replenish their Soulflay Charges.
Vestige Seeds
Vestige Seeds, Umbral Flowerbeds, and Seedlings are unique elements in Lords of the Fallen that set it apart from other games in the Soulslike genre. Vestige Seeds can be compared to portable bonfires in the game, allowing the Dark Crusader to plant a Seed on an Umbral Flowerbed, creating a Vestige Seedling that functions as a makeshift Vestige. However, once another Seedling is grown in a different Flowerbed, the previous one disappears.
However, traveling without Vestige Seeds can quickly lead to frustration. In many areas of Lords of the Fallen, players will find themselves without healing items, lost, and desperately searching for the next Vestige. Often, they will come across Umbral Flowerbeds instead. Without a single Vestige Seed, players have two options: either purchase one from the hub and return to the spot, or hope that an Umbral enemy nearby will drop one for them.
Vestige Moths
Let's discuss Vestige Moths. When players spend their hard-earned Vigor on Consumable Items from the Skyrest NPC Merchants, it is advisable to prioritize purchasing Vestige Moths or Vestige Seeds from Molhu. This is because these items often make the difference between returning to the hub with a large amount of Vigor or reaching a checkpoint closer to the upcoming boss fight.
Specifically, Vestige Moths have the same effect as the initial Desiccated Vestige Moth, but without any drawbacks. Instead of consuming all of the player's Vigor to return them to the latest Vestige (essentially a voluntary death), a Vestige Moth achieves the same outcome while allowing the player to retain their Vigor. It is highly recommended to use these items whenever players anticipate losing their Vigor in the near future or when they encounter a boss fight that they prefer to approach after spending their Vigor.
