Highlights

Choosing a subclass is vital for Sorcerers in Baldur's Gate 3 as it directly impacts their magical abilities, resistances, and backstory, ultimately shaping their gameplay mechanics.

Sorcerers are presented with three distinct subclasses, each presenting unique advantages and abilities.

Sorcerers offer a range of backgrounds and unique opportunities for role-playing, possessing innate magical abilities and the potential for formidable yet unpredictable magic. This makes them an enticing option for players seeking a fascinating class in Baldur's Gate 3.

The choice of class holds great significance during character creation, and the Sorcerer consistently remains a favored option among players. In contrast to Wizards, who draw power from their knowledge, Sorcerers are gifted spellcasters with inherent magical prowess. This magic stems from either a bloodline or a bestowed magical talent, granting them certain advantages over their fellow spellcasting peers. Each Sorcerer subclass further delves into the background of their bloodline and the source of their magical abilities.

Why a Sorcerer's Bloodline in Baldur's Gate 3 Informs Their Abilities

Choosing a subclass is a crucial decision for Sorcerers in Baldur's Gate 3 during character creation. This choice significantly impacts the gameplay mechanics they experience, which range from unpredictable magical effects to various resistances. Moreover, it also shapes the Sorcerer's backstory, influences their perception of their own magic, and potentially affects their behavior on the battlefield. Each bloodline subclass offers distinct effects for Sorcerers, most of which revolve around offensive magic. These effects can either work in favor of or against the party, making the subclass selection an important aspect of gameplay strategy.

Sorcerers have three subclasses to choose from that inform their bloodline:

Wild Magic: Whenever a Level 1 or higher spell is cast, there is a possibility of uncontrolled magic with a random outcome. Additionally, this feature bestows the Tides of Chaos ability, granting Advantage on the next Attack Roll, Ability Check, or Saving Throw, while also heightening the likelihood of a magical surge occurring.

Draconic Bloodline: Each Sorcerer level adds an extra point to the character's maximum Hit Points. Furthermore, the Sorcerer's skin exhibits patches of dragon scales, and when not wearing any armor, their Base Armor Class is raised to 3. The specific species and elemental affinity of the dragon are determined by the chosen color.

The Storm Sorcerer specializes in harnessing the power of lightning and other elemental magic. More information about this subclass will be made available during the launch.

On the other hand, the Draconic Bloodline subclass provides a wide range of elemental specializations and resistances. As the Sorcerer progresses, they gain the ability to learn an extra spell at Level 1, and at Level 6, they acquire resistance to a specific element and a boost in damage dealt with that element.

Sorcerers Have Diverse Backgrounds and Unique Role-Playing Opportunities

The Ultimate Guide to Dominating Baldur's Gate 3 as a Sorcerer

Sorcerers offer unique story and roleplaying opportunities compared to other spellcasting classes like Wizards. In Baldur's Gate 3, they are known for their exceptional attack power and their innate magical abilities, which adds depth to their character development. The Wild Magic subclass further adds intrigue, as it brings the potential for a character with immense power but struggles to control their magic, unintentionally harming both enemies and allies.

Additionally, Sorcerers possess the advantage of Charisma proficiency, making them more socially adept than the average Wizard. At Level Four, they acquire four Cantrips and need to prepare spells before casting them. However, the true gameplay advantage of Sorcerers lies in their ability to use Metamagic. By utilizing Sorcery Points, they can enhance their spells, transforming failures into successful outcomes.

Metamagic: Careful Spell – Allies are guaranteed to succeed at saving throws against spells that require them. This ability requires 1 Sorcery Point.

Metamagic: Distant Spell – Spells have their range extended by 50%. Melee spells have their range increased to 9 meters. This ability costs 1 Sorcery Point.

Metamagic: Extended Spell – Increases the duration of spell effects, summons, and created surfaces by two-fold. Requires 1 Sorcery Point.

Metamagic: Twinned Spell – Allows spells originally limited to a single target to also affect another creature. Requires 1 Sorcery Point.

Baldur's Gate 3 launches on the 3rd of August 2023 for PC and Mac, and on the 6th of September 2023 for PS5.
