Looking for a break from playing Spider-Man 2? Here's a perfect suggestion: why not watch all the Spider-Man movies in chronological order? This includes the original trilogy, MCU films, Spider-Verse entries, and many more.

Being a Spider-Man fan is truly exciting right now. Peter Parker has successfully portrayed his character in three live-action movies and has made appearances in MCU spin-offs. Additionally, the animated trilogy featuring Spider-Man has gained critical acclaim. And if all that wasn't amazing enough, No Way Home has brought together all three live-action Spideys: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland.

As a result, we're retrospectively evaluating the situation by presenting a chronological compilation of Spider-Man movies. Please note that this list excludes the television films from the 1970s, as well as Spider-Man's cameo appearances in other MCU movies. Furthermore, we will not be discussing any events that occurred in the concluding scenes of Venom: Let There be Carnage.

How many Spider-Man movies are there?

To date, there have been a total of 10 Spider-Man movies, and there are currently more in the works. The initial trilogy featured Tobey Maguire as the lead, beginning with the release of Spider-Man in 2002. The sequel, Spider-Man 2, followed in 2004, and the trilogy concluded with Spider-Man 3 in 2007. Although plans were in place for a fourth installment, it was ultimately cancelled due to script and scheduling conflicts.

In 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man and its sequel in 2014, Andrew Garfield took on the role of Peter Parker, assuming the responsibility of wall-crawling duties. There were plans for a third film in this iteration as well, but they fell through when Spidey joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tom Holland made his debut as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War and went on to star in his own trilogy with Spider-Man Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man Far From Home (2019), and the upcoming Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Fans can expect his return in the anticipated Spider-Man 4, which you can find more information about here.

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man movies

During the release of this live-action trilogy, Marvel and Sony also produced an animated film in 2018 called Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. The continuation of this story can be seen in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which premiered in cinemas earlier this year, with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse set to be released in 2024.

We’re kicking off with the three Tobey Maguire movies…

Spider-Man (2002)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

In the Sony Pictures film, Tobey Maguire takes on the iconic role of Spider-Man, while Willem Dafoe portrays his arch-nemesis, the Green Goblin.

The story centers around Peter Parker, an orphan who undergoes a life-altering transformation after being bitten by a genetically-engineered spider. This incident grants Peter extraordinary abilities such as superhuman speed, strength, and agility, along with the remarkable talent to climb walls and create webs. Consumed by guilt for failing to prevent the death of his beloved uncle, Peter dedicates himself to safeguarding the citizens of New York City.

Peter soon finds himself facing a formidable challenge when wealthy industrialist Norman Osborn (played by Willem Defoe), the father of his close friend Harry (portrayed by James Franco), subjects himself to an experimental serum. Tragically, this serum proves to be his downfall, driving him to madness and transforming him into the menacing Green Goblin. The ensuing events unfold in a breathtaking display of action, expertly directed by the talented Sam Raimi.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

Spidey 2 showcases the epic clash between Spider-Man and Doc Ock.

In this installment, director Raimi skillfully infuses his affinity for horror into the narrative. The storyline revolves around Otto Octavius, a nuclear scientist whose transformation takes inspiration from the captivating "mad professor" films. Brilliantly portrayed by Alfred Molina, Otto begins as a benevolent figure, guiding and mentoring Peter. However, tragedy strikes when Otto's wife passes away, and his spine becomes fused with four powerful tentacles. This transformative event leads him down a path of darkness, giving rise to the fearsome villain known as Doctor Octopus. Determined to recreate his experiment at any cost, Doc Ock becomes a formidable adversary for Spider-Man.

As for Pete, he grapples with the immense responsibility that accompanies his extraordinary powers. Engaging in a bitter dispute with his girlfriend Mary-Jane (Kirsten Dunst) - as well as with Harry - Parker relinquishes his role as a superhero. However, when MJ is abducted by Doc Ock, he once again assumes his Spidey persona, leading to an adrenaline-fueled, climactic confrontation that is both action-packed and ultimately sorrowful.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

Sony Pictures

The introduction of the black suit, followed by the appearance of Venom, occurred in Spider-Man 3.

In this installment, Spider-Man 3, Peter Parker rekindles his relationship with Mary-Jane while simultaneously battling against various adversaries. One of these foes is Harry Osborn, who assumes the identity of the Green Goblin and seeks revenge for his father's demise, which he holds Spider-Man responsible for. Additionally, Flint Marko, the individual who murdered Peter's uncle, inadvertently transforms into the shape-shifting Sandman after encountering a particle accelerator.

If that wasn't enough, a malevolent extraterrestrial symbiote known as Venom becomes united with Peter, taking control of him and, in the film's most notorious scene, compelling him to dance. Once he finally separates himself from the entity, Venom fuses with Eddie Brock (Topher Grace), a determined photographer intent on exposing Spider-Man. All of these events contribute to a convoluted narrative that ultimately marks the conclusion of Maguire's tenure. For now.

Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man movies

We’re continuing with Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man pair…

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

Sony Pictures presents Andrew Garfield as The Amazing Spider-Man in a refreshed storyline. In the subsequent installment of the franchise, directed by Marc Webb, Andrew Garfield takes on the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Once again, Peter is inexorably bitten by a spider, but this time, he takes it upon himself to construct his own web-shooters. Departing from the previous series, Gwen Stacy, portrayed by Emma Stone, becomes Peter's primary romantic interest.

As for the antagonist, Dr. Curt Connors, played by Rhys Ifans, is depicted as a scientist and a close friend of Pete’s father. Connors develops a serum aimed at regenerating limbs, but unfortunately, it also has a problematic side effect of transforming him into a colossal Lizard with a desire to mutate all humans into reptiles. Consequently, a fierce showdown between Spider-Man and the Lizard inevitably unfolds.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Jamie Foxx takes on the role of the villainous Electro. The film, unfortunately, repeats the same mistakes as Spider-Man 3 by introducing multiple adversaries for Peter Parker. Alongside Foxx, Dane DeHaan portrays Harry Osborn, who becomes the Green Goblin, and Paul Giamatti plays the character Alexsei Sytsevitch, also known as Rhino. The inclusion of all these characters causes Andrew Garfield's second performance as Spider-Man to lack a clear focus.

Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies

However, it showcases perhaps the most intense moment in Spider-Man history, as Peter Parker is unable to save Gwen Stacy, leading to the tragic sight of his beloved plummeting to her demise. This heartbreaking loss briefly brings Spider-Man's heroic journey to a halt. Nevertheless, he makes a triumphant return in the final scene to face off against Rhino, setting the stage for a highly anticipated Sinister Six movie that unfortunately never materialized.

We conclude the live-action portion of our list with Tom Holland’s trilogy…

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

In Homecoming, Spidey receives assistance from Iron Man.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spidey finds himself in a new home. Thanks to Captain America: Civil War, we have a new Spidey portrayed by Tom Holland. This time around, Jon Watts takes the helm as the director. Audiences are introduced to the youngest Peter Parker they've ever seen, but there's no need for a lengthy origin story. Peter is already an established superhero when the story begins.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Adrian Toomes, also known as Vulture and portrayed by Michael Keaton, emerges as Peter's nemesis. Interestingly, he happens to be the father of Peter's love interest from high school. Fortunately, Tony Stark, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, provides both mentorship to Spidey and aids him when faced with various challenges.

MJ, played by Zendaya, serves as Peter Parker's love interest in the Disney/Marvel universe.

In his second MCU film, Spider-Man embarks on a European holiday with his fellow classmates. Coincidentally, their trip aligns with the emergence of a new villain named Quentin Beck, portrayed by Jake Gyllenhaal, who deceives the world by posing as a heroic figure, Mysterio.

With Tony Stark absent, Nick Fury assumes the role of mentor. Meanwhile, a romance begins to develop between Peter and Mary-Jane (Zendaya), who soon realizes Peter's true identity as Spider-Man. Although this revelation is less than ideal, it is preferable to the entire world discovering his secret identity, which ultimately occurs towards the end of the film due to Mysterio's ploy.

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

Disney/MarvelPresenting the most spider-like iteration of Spider-Man to date.

In Far From Home, the introduction of the "multiverse" concept sets the stage for its significant role in No Way Home. Desperate to revert back to a time when his true identity remained a secret, Peter embarks on a quest to restore normalcy. With the aid of Doctor Strange and his spell-casting abilities, Peter's wish seems within reach. However, when the spell unexpectedly malfunctions, the multiverse fractures, bestowing upon this Peter Parker an influx of both heroes and villains into his own realm.

Meaning all of Willem Defoe’s Green Goblin, Alfred Molina’s Doc Ock, Jamie Foxx’s Electro, Rhys Ifans’ Lizard, and Thomas Haden Church’s Sandman make appearances. In the meantime, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker confronts them with aid from Tobey Maguire’s iteration, as well as Andrew Garfield’s. Friendships are forged, and old demons are put to rest. Tragically, Aunt May passes away. The movie concludes with MJ and best friend Ned, now oblivious to Peter’s true identity, leaving us in tears.

Animated Spider-Verse movies

To finish things off, we’ve got the Spider-Verse (soon-to-be) trilogy…

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

The first Spider-Verse film showcases Peter Parker's existence as Spider-Man in a world where a teenager named Miles Morales (voiced by Shameik Moore) gains Spidey-like abilities after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Miles eventually encounters the original Spider-Man, who tragically perishes. Motivated by this, Morales takes on the mantle and continues the superhero's mission, aided by the concept of multiple universes.

Firstly, an older version of Spidey named Peter B. Parker emerges and aids in training Miles. Subsequently, he joins forces with the likes of Spider-Woman, Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, and Peni Parker in order to defeat the numerous adversaries present in the film. These menacing villains include Wilson Fisk, Olivia Octavius, the Green Goblin, and the Prowler, who interestingly enough, turns out to be our hero's uncle!

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

Marvel/SonyMiles and the Spider-Verse.

Being just as good or surpassing it, Across the Spider-Verse brought Miles and the Spider-gang to new heights.

The film further explores the concept of the multi-verse, introducing the notion of "Canon events" which are fiercely defended by Spider-Man 2099, voiced by Oscar Isaac. These canon events create a conflict for Miles, as he grapples with what it truly means to be Spider-Man and finds himself at odds with the Spider-Verse, including his allies Gwen and Peter. To add to the suspense, the movie concludes with a cliff-hanger, leaving Miles in even greater peril.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (2024)

The Ultimate Guide to Binge-Watch Every Spider-Man Movie in Chronological Order

Miles confronts his inner self in Beyond the Spider-Verse.

Due to the expansive nature of the storyline in Across the Spider-Verse, screenwriters Chris Miller and Phil Lord made the deliberate choice to divide the film into two parts, thereby giving rise to the highly anticipated animated threequel, scheduled to release on March 29, 2024.
