An easy cleaning guide for most Roomba filters

When it comes to cleaning your Roomba filter, there is no need for any specialized tools. It is a swift and easy task that should not be overlooked due to its importance in enhancing your robot's performance.

Step 1: Remove the dustbin

To access the filter of your Roomba, regardless of the series you own, you will need to remove the dustbin from the robot. In most models, such as the 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, e, i, and j series, you can find the dustbin at the rear of the vacuum. Simply press the release button to detach it. However, in the case of the s series, the dustbin is located on the top of the robot. To remove it, open the lid and lift the bin handle.

Step 2: Empty the dustbin

After you have taken out the dustbin, carry it to the trash and press the designated button to open it. It may be necessary to gently shake the bin to ensure all debris is emptied. Even if you own a self-emptying Roomba, it is still advisable to check for any remaining dirt inside before proceeding further.

Step 3: Take out the filter

The location of the Roomba filter can be found inside the dustbin. Below are the specific spots for each series. Gently pull the filter to remove it from the bin, as it easily slides in and out of place.

Step 4: Remove dirt and debris from the filter

It is crucial not to wash Roomba filters with water, as they are not washable. Instead, you can tap the filter against the side of your trash can to dislodge dirt and debris. If the filter is not satisfactorily clean, use a paper towel or cleaning cloth to wipe it down. For stubborn dirt, a small, flat brush can be used for removal.

Step 5: Reinstall the filter and dustbin

Slide the filter back into place in the dustbin after removing any dirt or debris. Then, securely reinstall the dustbin in your Roomba so that it is ready for the next cleaning session.

To access the filter, open the dustbin door located beneath it. Conveniently, there is a tab at the end of the filter which allows for easy grabbing and lifting out of the bin.

E series, i series and j series filters

Positioned on the left side of the dustbin, the filter can be gently removed from the bin by gripping its sides, ensuring no damage is caused.

800 and 900 series filters

The filter is located beneath a door situated at the top of the dustbin. Simply press the release tab to uncover it. In order to remove the filter from the bin, utilize the yellow tab located at its end.

Place the blue-colored filter on top of the dustbin and gently press down before pulling up to detach it from the bin.

Cleaning vs. replacing a Roomba filter

Maintaining a properly functioning Roomba requires regular filter maintenance. Although cleaning the filter consistently is essential, there are times when a replacement becomes necessary. To determine the appropriate course of action, these useful guidelines can assist you.

When should you clean your Roomba filter?

According to iRobot, it is recommended to clean your Roomba's filter on a weekly basis. However, if you have pets, it is advisable to increase the frequency to twice a week. Keep in mind that the usage pattern of your robot plays a role in determining the filter cleaning needs. Running your vacuum daily may require more frequent cleaning, while weekly usage may necessitate less frequent cleaning. Nevertheless, if your Roomba has a new filter but exhibits weaker suction power, it may indicate a clogged filter that requires immediate cleaning.
