Overwatch 2's highly anticipated sixth season has finally arrived, bringing with it thrilling PvE story missions, a fresh support hero, and an exciting new game mode known as Flashpoint. Flashpoint introduces players to the expansive landscapes of New Junk City and Suravasa, boasting two of the largest maps ever seen in the hero shooter genre. Despite some initial confusion regarding objectives and map navigation, the community has largely embraced Flashpoint since its release. While there were concerns about how well the mode would perform in Overwatch 2's dynamic gameplay, the standard mode will not be available in Competitive Play until August 24, two weeks after Season 6's launch. While it has been exhilarating to experience the new mode, players eagerly await the addition of more maps to enhance its replayability.
Gothenburg
Arequipa
Gothenburg initially emerged as an Assault map, commonly referred to as 2CP, during BlizzCon 2019. With Overwatch 2 deciding to eliminate this contentious game mode, it is probable that Gothenburg has undergone some revisions. Interestingly, Season 6's Story Missions revealed the presence of Torbjorn's workshop and his family in this locale. Although the Ironclad mission included a payload at one point, this does not preclude the possibility of Gothenburg returning to its Assault version with the addition of a third capture point, aligning it with other Flashpoint maps.
Arequipa is a potential map based on the former capital of Peru. Illari's backstory reveals her Peruvian heritage, making Arequipa an ideal candidate for the game's next themed map. A 2016 Overwatch blog post may have already hinted at this map's existence, as it listed three locations in an image: Watchpoint: Gibraltar, Watchpoint: Grand Mesa, and Arequipa. Given the limited number of maps in Push and Flashpoint, Illari's homeland would be a great addition to either of these game modes.
Hanamura
Horizon Lunar Colony
Despite its removal in Overwatch 2 alongside other Assault maps, Hanamura remains cherished by fans for its captivating aesthetics, featuring cherry blossoms and its connection to the Shimada clan. However, the map had its share of issues, ranging from glitches in the original Overwatch version to concerns about the balance of two capture points and the proximity of defender spawns. Nevertheless, if Hanamura were to reemerge as a Flashpoint location, there would undoubtedly be a warm welcome from the community.
The debate surrounding Horizon Lunar Colony was so intense in the original Overwatch that it was ultimately removed from ranked gameplay and eventually from the game entirely. However, a potential solution to save this divisive map came with the Starwatch: Galactic Rescue event in Overwatch 2 Season 4. Introducing four capture points could possibly improve the moon map's performance and also involve some expansion. Given its previous uses, transforming Horizon Lunar Colony into a Flashpoint map seems like the most appropriate choice at this time.
Currently, Overwatch 2 does not seem to prioritize the development of new maps. This is evident with Push having only three maps and Flashpoint having two. However, it is likely that the game developers will focus on adding more maps in the future, as the lack of variety can lead to player disinterest. While it is uncertain if any of the aforementioned maps will be redesigned for Flashpoint, there is a high possibility that players will have the opportunity to encounter them again in some way.
