The Ultimate Blueprint: Unveiling the Perfect Path for Marvel's Wolverine Franchise!

Uncover the potential of Marvel's Wolverine as a franchise: Explore the rich comic lore to discover a promising direction for the beloved character's journey

Highlights

Marvel's Wolverine from Insomniac Games will feature a grittier atmosphere, highlighting the ferociousness of Wolverine and the lethal power of his indestructible claws. At this time, there remains uncertainty regarding potential plans for expanding it into a franchise.

If so, Insomniac has the opportunity to draw inspiration from the comics and showcase the talents of Wolverine's loyal companions by developing spin-off games for these standout characters. Similar to how Marvel's Spider-Man introduced various members of the Spider family, Wolverine's circle of allies, such as X-23, Old Man Logan, and Daken, presents the chance for a highly successful game series with enduring appeal.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is highly anticipated by fans and set to release on October 20. However, there is also a lot of intrigue surrounding Insomniac's next Marvel project, Wolverine. Since its announcement in September 2021, little information has been released, leaving fans eager to learn more about the game. The teaser trailer showcased a darker tone, in line with Wolverine's brutal nature and his use of adamantium claws. The teaser also hinted at the game's setting, with a bar fight scene taking place at The Princess Bar in Madripoor, a fictional island in Southeast Asia. While details are scarce, the potential for a franchise similar to Spider-Man is evident in the comics.

Wolverine Has Just as Big a Cast of Friends and Family as Spider-Man Does

The Ultimate Blueprint: Unveiling the Perfect Path for Marvel's Wolverine Franchise!

Just like Marvel's Spider-Man, which drew inspiration from the comics and expanded the "Spider family" to include Miles Morales, Wolverine also has a substantial family that could potentially be introduced in the franchise. Leading the pack is Laura Kinney, who is also known as X-23. X-23 has been an established character for some time now and even took over as the X-Men's "Wolverine" when Logan was temporarily deceased. What sets her apart is that she is a genetic clone of Logan, with the exception of having two X chromosomes, making her female. X-23 was created by the Weapon X scientists in the early 2000s and is younger than Wolverine. In the movie Logan, she was portrayed as Wolverine's biological daughter.

X-23 already has a rich and intricate history, first appearing in the NYX series as a teenage prostitute before her origin as a laboratory experiment was revealed. Unlike Logan, she possesses two claws on each hand and one claw on each foot, giving her kicks a deadly edge. Additionally, unlike Wolverine, X-23 does not have adamantium coating her entire skeleton; it is solely present on her claws, presenting both advantages and disadvantages to her abilities.

The scientists behind X-23 proceeded to create clones of her, resulting in the youngest clone named Gabby becoming Laura's ward. Unlike her siblings, Gabby possesses Laura's healing abilities and has a claw on each hand. Laura and Gabby have formed a close bond and have even taken on a real-life wolverine as a pet, courtesy of Squirrel Girl's gift.

Then there's Old Man Logan, a complex character originating from a one-off comic series set in a post-apocalyptic Earth where an aged Wolverine survives. After his family is brutally murdered by the Hulk clan, who owns his land, Logan embarks on a vengeful mission, ultimately taking down a malevolent Bruce Banner and his offspring. Eventually, Old Man Logan makes his way to the main Marvel universe, Earth-616, and temporarily assumes the role of Wolverine for the X-Men while the original Wolverine is deceased. However, it is X-23 who ultimately takes on the mantle of Wolverine.

In addition to the original Wolverine, also known as Logan, there are numerous other individuals who possess similar genetics. These include clones, alternate versions from different universes, and even Logan's true-born son named Daken, who frequently assumes the role of a villain in the comics. These "family" characters have all garnered significant popularity individually. As a result, Insomniac has an extensive lineup of "Wolverines" to create a long-lasting video game franchise for years to come. Currently, Marvel's Wolverine is being developed specifically for the PlayStation 5.
