Summary
Emperor Palpatine's duel with Darth Maul showcases his true power in the dark side, surpassing anything seen in the Star Wars films.
Palpatine effortlessly eliminates Maul's Mandalorian soldiers and then emerges victorious over both Maul and his brother, showcasing his unmatched command over the Force and remarkable lightsaber prowess. This serves as a stark reminder of the immense power gap between Darth Sidious and his former apprentice. Furthermore, Palpatine adeptly conceals his presence from Maul, revealing his exceptional ability to manipulate his true motives through the Force.
Emperor Palpatine's duel with Darth Maul showcased his true mastery of the dark side in a more profound way than any other Star Wars film. Set during the Clone Wars era, Palpatine, also known as Darth Sidious, became aware of Maul's activities on the planet Mandalore. Despite recognizing Maul as a potential rival, Palpatine never feared Maul's ability to replace him.
In the animated Clone Wars series, it was revealed that Darth Maul had survived his previous duel with Obi-Wan Kenobi in The Phantom Menace. Saved by his brother Savage Oppress and equipped with mechanical legs by the Nightsisters of Dathomir, Maul and Savage embarked on a mission of revenge against Kenobi. They also gathered various criminal syndicates and the Death Watch to form a formidable Shadow Collective, with the aim of conquering Mandalore. However, Maul's plans were thwarted when his former master intervened. In this confrontation, Palpatine's immense power in the dark side was fully demonstrated.

Palpatine Uses Darth Vader's Force Choke
When Palpatine makes his debut on Mandalore in The Clone Wars season 5, episode 16, he is promptly greeted by two of Maul's newly recruited Mandalorian soldiers who originate from the Death Watch, a small group of Mandalorians who remained loyal to their planet's warrior culture despite Mandalore's pacifist and neutral stance during the Clone Wars. Nevertheless, Palpatine effortlessly dispatches them both, using the Force to choke them without even exerting much effort. Although the Force choke is a notorious dark side power commonly associated with Darth Vader in the Star Wars universe, its execution appears even more effortless when Palpatine performs it in this initial scene.
It's important to mention that Mandalorians were a potential threat to the Jedi, considering the historical conflict between the two groups during the Old Republic era. Despite the fact that some members of the Death Watch adhered to traditional warrior customs, they did not offer much resistance. Had they encountered a Jedi, the situation might have been different. Unfortunately, both Mandalorians and Jedi were easily defeated and disregarded by Darth Sidious as if their existence held no significance.
Palpatine Hides His Presence From Maul Until The Time Is Right
It is noteworthy that Maul's perception of Palpatine's presence is limited until Darth Sidious deems it necessary. In the Clone Wars episode, Maul senses the familiar aura of his former master only moments before Palpatine is poised to enter the throne room of the Duchess of Mandalore. This conveys that Palpatine possesses the ability to conceal his arrival on Mandalore, thus preventing Maul from anticipating his approach to either escape or fortify defenses.
Caught completely off-guard by the sudden appearance of his former master, Maul made an attempt to exhibit subservience by asserting that everything he had accomplished was solely for Palpatine. Nevertheless, Sidious astutely saw through Maul's words, recognizing that Maul's ambitions had far surpassed the desire to be Palpatine's apprentice again (assuming Palpatine even wanted Maul at his side in the first place). Regardless, Sidious' adeptness at concealing his presence from Maul, utilizing the Force, is perfectly comprehensible considering the decades he had spent disguising his true identity from the Jedi Order as the Supreme Chancellor of the Republic.
Palpatine Effortlessly Demonstrates His Power In The Force
Interestingly, Lucasfilm considered the possibility of Maul fighting back against Palpatine using the Force in this Clone Wars episode, which was particularly intense. However, they ultimately decided against it. This decision further emphasized the fact that both Maul and his brother were completely powerless against Sidious' overwhelming control of the Force. Throughout their conflict, Palpatine effortlessly flung Maul and Savage around like puppets, slamming them into walls and windows with minimal effort.
Throughout the majority of the battle, the future Emperor gleefully manipulates Maul and Savage, clearly amused by their feeble attempts to oppose him. This demonstrates just how effortless the fight is for Darth Sidious, as he effortlessly outmatches Maul and his brother, emphasizing his superior strength.
Although Maul possesses considerable power and poses a significant threat, this episode unequivocally displays his inferiority to Palpatine and his dark side abilities. Indeed, the battle concludes with Maul desperately begging for mercy, only to be callously denied by Palpatine, who responds by unleashing his trademark Force lightning upon his former apprentice.
Palpatine Even Shows How Good He Is In Lightsaber Duels
Before this episode of The Clone Wars and beyond, Darth Maul was portrayed as a formidable fighter, a Sith Lord who often wielded a double-bladed lightsaber and the renowned Darksaber of Mandalorian myth. He successfully killed Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, faced Obi-Wan Kenobi multiple times, and took the lives of many others. Similarly, Savage Oppress had his fair share of kills, including Jedi, despite his limited time alongside Asajj Ventress, Count Dooku, and eventually his own brother. However, both Maul and Savage were easily defeated by Palpatine, showcasing his own mastery with the lightsaber.
The defeats of both Maul and Savage were evident as soon as Darth Sidious ignited his twin crimson lightsabers in this Clone Wars episode. It is worth mentioning that Palpatine’s preferred weapon was the dark side itself. This is because the Sith traditionally viewed the lightsaber as merely a symbol, with the blood-red color representing their Sith status. The lightsaber was also a tool used to mock and embarrass the Jedi, as the Sith would claim the sabers of fallen Jedi as their own after extracting the kyber crystals within them. However, this does not imply that Palpatine lacked skill in swordsmanship.
During the lightsaber duel between the three dark side users, Palpatine's laughter echoed through the air, highlighting how effortlessly he dominated the fight. Not only did he successfully eliminate Savage, but he swiftly disarmed Maul mere moments into their confrontation. This encounter serves as a clear foreshadowing of the Jedi Masters' futile attempts to apprehend Palpatine in Revenge of the Sith. Despite this, Palpatine's battle with Darth Maul remains the ultimate display of Darth Sidious' overwhelming power in the Star Wars universe.
