However, for many viewers, the Bent-Neck Lady stands out as the most frightening ghost.

Not only is the Bent-Neck Lady one of the scariest ghosts in the show, but her true identity also serves as one of the most significant plot twists in the series. In the exact middle of the season, it is revealed that the Bent-Neck Lady is actually Eleanor Crain, the youngest sibling in the Crain family, affectionately known as Nell. But what led to her transformation into this terrifying figure?

Who is the Bent-Neck Lady?

The Bent-Neck Lady, a prominent ghost in The Haunting of Hill House, makes her first appearance just seven minutes into the first episode. She is seen looming behind a young Nell's bed. Despite Nell's attempts to inform her family about the ghost, they dismiss her claims as mere nightmares. Unfortunately for Nell, her nightmare doesn't end there.

In an attempt to escape the ghostly presence, Nell decides to sleep on the living room couch. However, the Bent-Neck Lady once again appears, hovering ominously above her. Later, the specter reappears when Nell takes her brother, Luke, to rehab. Reluctantly, Nell assists Luke in taking one final dose before getting clean. However, her encounter with the Bent-Neck Lady occurs when they stop during their journey, as she stands ominously on the street outside. Surprisingly, when Nell returns to Hill House, the Bent-Neck Lady also appears at the motel where she is staying.

The presence of the Bent-Neck Lady is not experienced by the other members of the Crain family to the same extent as Nell. However, Luke does witness her floating above Nell's grave at her funeral, although Steve convinces him that it is mere imagination. In an intense moment during an argument between Nell's sisters, Theo and Shirley, the Bent-Neck Lady provides a terrifying jump scare. Furthermore, in episode 6, "Two Storms", there is a heart-wrenching scene where Nell's father, Hugh, finally sees the ghost and comprehends the heartbreaking tragedy that Nell has endured.

How does Nell die?

However, as she approaches the house, eerie events persist, hinting at a chilling outcome.

Upon entering, Nell is confronted by a nostalgic vision of the house from her childhood. Surrounded by her family, including her mother and even Arthur, she engages in a dance with her deceased husband. Suddenly, she finds herself atop a spiral staircase. In a poignant moment, Olivia presents Nell with a necklace, a long-awaited gift from her childhood. However, instead of embracing her with sentimental warmth, the necklace cruelly tightens around Nell's neck. As the vision dissolves, Nell regains consciousness on the staircase, now with a noose instead of a locket. Tragically, Olivia pushes her, causing the rope to tighten abruptly, ultimately resulting in Nell's fatal neck injury.

How did Nell become the Bent-Neck Lady?

Nell's fall down the staircase results in a broken neck and a peculiar series of events. She awakens in the motel where she had previously encountered the Bent-Neck Lady, only this time she exists as a ghost, observing her human self from above. Continuously, she descends through time, manifesting as a ghost in various moments of her own life. The journey concludes as she plummets directly beside young Nell's bed. When she spots her past self peering at her, she unleashes a scream of terror.
