Test screenings for Aquaman 2 received negative reactions from fans, possibly due to the inclusion of a comic book storyline where Black Manta kills Aquaman and Mera's baby.
The film has experienced substantial changes, which include the inclusion of two distinct depictions of Batman portrayed by Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck.
It is improbable that Jason Momoa disguised himself as Johnny Depp on set with the intention of causing distress to co-star Amber Heard, given that Momoa's conduct on set is widely recognized for its professionalism and amicability.
Kevin Smith weighed in on the controversy surrounding Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, addressing the alleged behind-the-scenes issues and Jason Momoa's behavior, as claimed by Amber Heard. After surpassing the billion-dollar mark at the box office, Aquaman exceeded everyone's expectations, making a sequel inevitable. The excitement for a sequel that would live up to its predecessor grew even more when Dolph Lundgren, Momoa's co-star, expressed his belief that Aquaman 2 was superior to the original film. However, the situation took a negative turn when reports of unfavorable test screenings surfaced.
While rumors initially suggested that the Aquaman 2 test screenings were disappointing, it has now been all but confirmed that the fans who attended were left unsatisfied. One industry veteran, Kevin Smith, offered his insight on the negative reaction during an episode of the Fatman Beyond podcast. Smith noted that a possible reason for the disappointment could be the inclusion of a significant comic book storyline where Black Manta kills Aquaman and Mera's baby. Apparently, this particular plot point in the movie led to audiences walking out in disdain, exclaiming, "f--k this."
"I can comprehend that. If some viewers are like, 'I didn't come to a superhero movie to witness a f--king baby's death,' but as a fan of the comic books, I thought, 'Well, that's what they did in the comics,'" added Smith. "It seems like they've made numerous changes to this movie. They had, at least, two Batmans in this film. They had Michael Keaton Batman and also Ben Affleck Batman." Keaton recently reprised his role in The Flash alongside Ben Affleck and George Clooney, and BTS shots from WB's canceled Batgirl film also showcased his appearance.
Addressing the allegation that Momoa dressed up as Johhny Depp to antagonize Heard on the set of Aquaman 2, Smith expressed his skepticism. "I don't think he specifically dressed up as Johnny Depp. I think he just naturally dresses in a similar style, with layers and such," Smith said, aligning with what insiders and Momoa's representatives have been asserting since the accusation was made. While Momoa, Heard's co-star in Aquaman, did show some support for Depp during the public debacle, it still seems far-fetched to claim that he changed his attire to intentionally distress Heard on the set of a project he was leading. This action would contradict his established reputation for professionalism and amiable behavior on set.
Despite the negative news and Warner Bros. Discovery's unwavering commitment to the unfavorable release window, the allegations suggesting that Aquaman 2 is being deliberately positioned for failure continue to persist. The lack of support from its star, Momoa, and other prominent cast members may be the reason why the DCEU's success dwindles quietly.
Scheduled for a theatrical release on December 20, 2023, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom awaits its audience.
