Highlights
The Omenkiller boss in Elden Ring reinvents the criticized Capra Demon fight from Dark Souls, with improvements in the arena design and boss difficulty.
The frustrating dog enemies in the Capra Demon fight are not as frustrating as the dogs that accompany the Omenkiller. In Elden Ring, players frequently find themselves facing bosses along with additional enemies or companions. To make the Omenkiller fight easier, players can choose to summon an NPC or use Spirit Ash summons for assistance, which can significantly alter the player's interaction with the boss and its supporting enemies.
FromSoftware has undergone significant evolution as a developer, progressing from the King's Field era to the current titles like Elden Ring and Armored Core. Throughout this journey, the developer has consistently embraced the opportunity to reimagine and introduce old concepts in innovative ways. A notable example of this can be seen in the Village of the Albinaurics, where the Omenkiller completely transforms a previously criticized fight from Dark Souls.
The reimagining witnessed in Elden Ring was a direct response to the Capra Demon boss in the original Dark Souls, which has often been criticized as one of the weakest bosses in the series. However, the Omenkiller surpasses its predecessor by not merely borrowing the moveset of the Capra Demon, but by reinventing the entire encounter.
An Omenkiller and their Dogs
Both the Omenkiller and Capra Demon fights share a common aspect of having additional enemies or companions accompanying them. However, unlike the highly criticized inclusion of dogs in the Capra Demon fight in Dark Souls, the presence of these enemies alongside the Omenkiller is much less frustrating. This difference can be attributed, in part, to Elden Ring frequently pitting players against bosses with extra enemies or companions, unlike the majority of Dark Souls leading up to Lower Undead Burg.
Another distinction between the Capra Demon and the Omenkiller lies in the availability of an NPC summon in the Village of the Albinaurics before the fight. Although there is a possibility of not having access to the NPC summon, Nepheli Loux, when facing the Omenkiller, having assistance can significantly impact how players approach this aggressive boss and its backup. Additionally, the Spirit Ash summons present in the game provide players with a significant advantage against bosses similar to the Omenkiller that have their own backup.
Elden Ring Places the Pack in a Village Square
The main criticism of the Capra Demon in Dark Souls is not the inclusion of the dogs, but rather how all three enemies are crammed into a small room, causing camera issues. The Omenkiller addresses this flaw by providing the player with more space to dodge and maneuver in the arena. In fact, there are few locations in Elden Ring where the arenas are as small as the original Capra Demon fight.
However, while the increased space removes some of the problems from the original fight, it also simplifies the encounter with Omenkiller and makes the boss easier compared to its previous version. This presents a challenge for developer FromSoftware, who must maintain the difficulty of Elden Ring while addressing some of the unfair mechanics that made older games challenging. Therefore, the Omenkiller has been given additional attacks to its double great-machete moveset inherited from the Capra Demon, as well as a more aggressive AI.
The Omenkiller and the original Capra Demon can be easily compared, and it is evident that the Omenkiller fight is a significant improvement in various aspects. The arena for the Omenkiller fight is much fairer compared to that of the Capra Demon. Additionally, the new boss poses a tougher challenge on its own, regardless of the increased space for movement. This is just one example of how Elden Ring demonstrates how FromSoftware has continued to refine the Soulsborne formula with each new installment.
You can now play Elden Ring on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
