Run Time: 1 hr 44 min | Director: Griffin Dunne
Starring Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, and Stockard Channing, Practical Magic follows witch sisters Sally and Gillian Owens as they navigate a curse that prevents them from finding true love. Despite facing prejudice from their community, the sisters embark on a journey to find acceptance and happiness. This heartfelt film, often compared to Bewitched, goes beyond the realm of fantasy to explore the real struggles and heartbreak experienced by the main characters. 27 Dresses (2008)
Run Time: 1 hr 51 min | Genre: Comedy, Romance | Director: Anne Fletcher
Starring Katherine Heigl and James Marsden, "27 Dresses" reimagines the popular saying "always the bridesmaid, never the bride" as the central theme of this early 2000s romantic comedy. Heigl portrays Jane Nichols, a woman who has attended 27 weddings and yearns for her own special day. Complications arise when the man of her dreams is set to marry her younger sister. While contemporary romantic comedies have evolved beyond the stereotype of women solely desiring marriage, it can be enjoyable to reminisce about the formula that movies are currently challenging. Additionally, Marsden delivers an incredibly charming performance, making "27 Dresses" a must-watch in our opinion.

Happiest Season (2020)
Image via Hulu
Run Time: 1 hr 42 min | Director: Clea Duvall
Cast: Kristen Stewart, Mackenzie Davis, Aubrey Plaza, Allison Brie, Mary Holland, Mary Steenburgen, Victor Garber, Dan Levy, Jake McDorman
Happiest Season may not be the feel-good rom-com that many viewers were expecting, but it offers a unique take on the traditional saccharine Christmas romance. Kristen Stewart shines as Abby, a young woman who is about to meet her girlfriend Harper's family for the first time. Abby plans to propose at their annual Christmas party, but faces the challenge that Harper's family is unaware of her sexuality. As Abby arrives, she is forced back into the closet and realizes there are aspects of Harper she had never known.
Despite a standout performance from Stewart, one of Happiest Season's major drawbacks is its ensemble of characters who are predominantly unlikable and cruel. However, there are exceptions, including Dan Levy who captivates as Abby's best friend, Aubrey Plaza who is charming as Harper's ex, and Mary Holland who steals scenes as Harper's quirky sister. Despite the problematic portrayal of queer romance in the film, Happiest Season effectively explores the challenges of loving someone who has had to hide their true self, and the complications that arise when they decide to be honest. It is hoped that Abby and Harper sought therapy after their experiences.
