The event, which recognizes awards given by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' Board of Governors, paid tribute to Mel Brooks, film editor Carol Littleton, Sundance Institute's Michelle Satter, and Angela Bassett.
Angela Bassett, aged 65, received praise for her long and successful career. According to Academy president Janet Yang, Bassett has consistently delivered outstanding performances that have raised the bar for acting.

Only a few days after the 81st annual Golden Globes, Hollywood's biggest stars were once again dressed to the nines for the 2024 Governors Awards on January 9. The event, dedicated to recognizing achievements in the film industry, paid tribute to Mel Brooks, film editor Carol Littleton, Michelle Satter of the Sundance Institute, and Angela Bassett. Bassett, 65, was honored for her exceptional career spanning decades. Academy president Janet Yang praised her in a press release, stating, "Angela Bassett has consistently delivered outstanding performances that have set new standards in acting."
During her acceptance speech, Bassett expressed her gratitude for the award and urged the audience to advocate for inclusivity.
"It's not just about me," she emphasized.
