High School Musical: The Musical: The Series is making its much-anticipated return for its fourth and final season on Wednesday, August 9th. In a departure from previous years, Disney+ will release all eight episodes at once, allowing viewers to binge-watch the last installment in one go. The new season continues where we left off, after the Wildcats' eventful summer at Camp Shallow Lake, with many important storylines carrying over. Ashlyn (Julia Lester) has come to a significant realization about her sexuality, while Kourtney (Dara Reneé) and Carlos (Frankie Rodriguez) are taken by surprise by the final edit of the Frozen documentary.
Alongside preparing for their performance of High School Musical 3: Senior Year with Miss Jenn, the characters also have the opportunity to be featured extras in the upcoming High School Musical 4. However, the reality of being part of a Hollywood production may not be as glamorous as the Wildcats had imagined. Joshua Bassett, Sofia Wylie, Kate Reinders, and Liamani Segura continue as regular cast members, with exciting cameo appearances from High School Musical alumni Corbin Bleu, Monique Coleman, Lucas Grabeel, Bart Johnson, Alyson Reed, and Kaycee Stroh.
Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez & Julia Lester Talk HSMTMTS Season 4
Stars Dara Reneé, Frankie Rodriguez, and Julia Lester exclusively discuss their characters' upcoming storylines and reflect on their time on the show with Screen Rant. Additionally, it is important to note that this interview was conducted prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, and it is crucial to acknowledge the immense contributions of the writers and actors in both WGA and SAG-AFTRA, without whom this show wouldn't exist.Screen Rant: Well done on the incredible accomplishment of having four exceptional seasons of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series! Julia, in the previous season, Ashlyn unearthed a significant aspect about her own sexuality. Can we anticipate further exploration of this aspect in the concluding set of episodes?
Julia Lester: Absolutely, high schoolers are in a constant state of growth and change, often on a daily basis. Last season, we were given a small glimpse into the lives of these individuals. However, it was only a two-week period during the summer. Now, we are embarking on a full new semester of high school, which presents its own set of challenges, self-discoveries, and personal growth.
Ashlyn's queer storyline is far from over. There is still so much more to explore. Even after the season concludes, viewers can imagine the continuous self-discovery journey she will embark on for the rest of her life. As a queer woman myself, I know firsthand that personal growth and exploration is an ongoing process. This is certainly true for Ashlyn as well.
Dara, have you noticed the positive response to the chemistry between your character and Jet in the last season? Can fans expect any scenes with you and Adrian [Lyles] in the upcoming season?
Dara Reneé: Great question! Firstly, I want to express my love for all the Jetney fans out there! I see you, I'm here with you, and we're in this together. Let me start by saying that Adrian is an incredible person, both in terms of talent and kindness. Season 4 is packed with exciting moments, so keep an eye out. There will be some unexpected twists that will leave you pleasantly surprised.
Frankie, what about Carlos? Might the documentary cause some issues for him this season?
Frankie Rodriguez: The end of last season left us in complete shock, it felt like an episode straight out of Real Housewives. I can't wait to see how things unfold in the upcoming season, it'll definitely be an exciting challenge for Carlos and Seb.
And finally, as this is the last season, could you both briefly share your thoughts on your journey with the show?
Julia Lester expresses her surprise upon learning that it is the final season. She quickly laughs it off and reflects on the past four years, describing them as the most incredible and memorable of her life. She emphasizes the strong and unbreakable bonds she has formed with her co-stars, referring to them as true best friends. They are the first people she turns to in times of both joy and sorrow. Julia plans to include them in her future wedding and considers them lifelong companions. Though the show may be coming to an end, their friendship will endure. She expresses gratitude that they all reside in close proximity, ensuring that they will continue to annoy each other indefinitely.
Frankie Rodriguez: Working with these amazing people has always felt like winning the lottery to me. Everyone is not only incredibly talented but also so much fun to be around. I constantly learn from them, and that is definitely the most valuable thing I take away from this experience. I am fortunate to have such incredible individuals in my life.
Dara Reneé: I completely agree. It's not just about filming with talented individuals, but also knowing that they are genuine and kind. It's like a never-ending celebration on set, with the added bonus of nostalgic songs from our childhood. Honestly, it doesn't get any better than this.
