Summary
Introducing a fresh concept for cosplay enthusiasts: a captivating representation of Pennywise the clown, smartly reinvented with a gender-swapped twist inspired by Bill Skarsgård's remarkable rendition in the recent revitalization of Stephen King's It novel.
Skarsgård portrayed the role of the infamous killer clown in both It and It Chapter 2; however, it is unlikely that he will return to portray the character in Welcome To Derry, an anticipated prequel series.
There is potential for a female variation of Pennywise to be included in future adaptations of King's works, especially considering that the monster's true form, as implied in King's books, is female.
Check out this chilling new cosplay that reimagines Pennywise the clown as a gender-swapped version. Adapted from Stephen King's acclaimed book, the It reboot was released in 2017 and follows a group of children in Derry who unite to defeat a shape-shifting monster posing as a clown. Bill Skarsgård portrays Pennywise, who returns in the 2019 film It Chapter 2, where the older versions of the children confront the demonic clown once again. @kuru_m_cosplay on Instagram has now shared an incredible cosplay depicting what a female Pennywise might look like. Take a look below:
Would A Female Pennywise Work?
: Clearly drawing more from Skarsård's portrayal of the clown rather than Tim Curry's in the 1990 It miniseries, this cosplay showcases Pennywise's distinctive red and white face paint, orange hair, and even incorporates a few red balloons. To wrap up the story of King's original novel, Andy Muschietti directed two captivating It movies. Currently, there are no plans for It 3. However, fans can rejoice as the world of King's novel will be further explored in an exciting prequel series titled Welcome to Derry. This upcoming Max original show is set in the 1960s, twenty years prior to the events of the first movie. It is highly anticipated that Pennywise will make an appearance, adding to the chilling narrative.
Skarsgård is not slated to reprise his role as Pennywise in Welcome to Derry, indicating that the show will feature a fresh iteration of the notorious killer clown. While maintaining continuity may lead to Pennywise once again adopting a male form, it is plausible to consider the potential for a female Pennywise who could invoke an equal or even heightened sense of fear in line with King's novels.
In King's book, Pennywise's true form is unveiled as a colossal, pregnant spider, which implies that the creature may indeed be female rather than male. Considering that the clown appearance is not Pennywise's true form, there is no narrative obstacle preventing the entity from manifesting as a female clown. The depiction of Pennywise in Welcome to Derry is yet to be revealed, but indications from recent It cosplay suggest that a female rendition of the clown could produce the same bone-chilling effect.
