Gal Gadot's career has followed an unconventional path. While she has appeared in highly successful films over the past decade, she has yet to establish herself with a solo franchise. Despite her supporting role in the Fast Saga and her portrayal of Wonder Woman, which may not have gained much traction after just two films, Gal Gadot finds herself as the third billed name in Red Notice. Her latest endeavor, Heart of Stone, serves as her attempt to secure a Mission: Impossible-style project that can be associated with her name.
Netflix's action movies, known for their blockbuster status, carry a certain stigma. Often prioritizing star power over compelling storytelling, these big-budget spectacles tend to lack substance. The less popular releases are typically generic imitations of John Wick, only differentiated by a different celebrity donning a fancy suit. Heart of Stone embraces its aspirations to emulate Mission: Impossible, and unfortunately, it fails to change the perception surrounding Netflix's original films.
What is Heart of Stone about?
Rachel Stone is introduced as a newcomer to the world of espionage, living in a van. She is assigned a mission by MI6 to capture an arms dealer, alongside her team comprising of Yang, Bailey, and Parker. However, when the mission goes wrong, Stone surprises everyone by displaying numerous new skills to pursue her target. It is later revealed that Stone is actually an experienced agent working for Charter, a secretive organization that was previously believed to be fictional. Charter is an independent entity, founded by former intelligence agents, that operates beyond global politics. At the core of the organization is a sophisticated AI system called The Heart, which collects data and accurately predicts future events.
Following her failure in Italy, Stone discovers Keya, a brilliant young hacker who holds a grudge against The Heart. Stone becomes aware that her MI6 colleagues have been assigned to investigate Keya, and she joins forces with them in order to find the talented computer genius.
The structure of Charter consists of four teams, with each team being assigned a codename based on playing cards. Stone's codename is Nine of Hearts. The AI system, operated directly by the Jack of Hearts, has the ability to hack into any system and is housed in an airship called the Locker, positioned thousands of feet above ground level. The leaders of the organization are referred to as the Four Kings.
Stone and her MI6 team travel to Portugal in pursuit of Keya, but they find themselves in the midst of a major ambush, forcing Stone to abandon her position. As a result, her true allegiance to Charter is exposed. In a shocking turn of events, Parker, one of Stone's team members, kills Bailey and Yang, and then proceeds to poison Stone. Parker reveals that he and Keya are after The Heart. Keya developed a deep resentment for The Heart after being mentored by a morally upright criminal, while Parker was injured in a missile strike approved by Charter. The two vengeful individuals attempt to hack into the Locker and steal The Heart. Stone, now betrayed, must take on her former friend in order to prevent him from utilizing The Heart for evil purposes.
How does Heart of Stone end?
Parker and Keya rebel against The Heart's creators, resulting in the deaths of numerous Charter agents and the perilous predicament of others. Stone manages to secretly attach a tracking device on Keya, who cleverly uses it to lure Charter members into a deadly trap. Meanwhile, agents find themselves trapped with a time bomb at an Icelandic university. In a separate incident, Stone's superior Nomad and other Charter members find themselves confined in an underground bunker. Unfortunately, an explosion kills the agents in Iceland, but Stone narrowly escapes. Nomad's team is rapidly depleting their oxygen supply. Parker's scheme to eliminate the Four Kings leads to significant collateral damage and the deaths of countless innocent people. Keya, realizing her differences in political ideals from Parker's vengeful pursuit, sabotages The Heart to strip him of its power. Parker becomes hostile towards Keya, while she informs Stone of their location.
In a different Icelandic university, Keya and Parker continue their operations. Stone forcefully enters and engages in a fierce fight with Parker, with Keya assisting. Ultimately, Keya shoots Parker. In his last moments, Parker offers her a promising future in the afterlife. Keya is apprehended and incarcerated in a federal prison. Two of the Four Kings, along with several Charter agents, perish. After some time, Stone visits Keya in prison and explains the need for new recruits in the Charter to replace the fallen members. He offers Keya a job and a chance to escape her dire circumstances, mirroring how the Charter had once helped Stone. The final scene portrays Stone forming a new team with Keya and the recently promoted Jack of Hearts.
Heart of Stone is a thrilling spy film, featuring a timeless MacGuffin and an abundance of betrayals. The conclusion sees Hannah Stone adding another accomplishment to her record, successfully returning The Heart to the Charter. Moreover, she now leads a formidable team dedicated to preserving peace. With its clear objective, the movie sets the stage for a potential franchise centered around its talented protagonist. Should enthusiasts rally behind this endeavor, they can anticipate the return of Hannah Stone and her exceptional spy team in numerous thrilling installments exploring the realm of perilous espionage.
