Our website recently interviewed director Justin Simien about the cast of the Haunted Mansion movie. Simien revealed that despite his Oscar-winning potential, Jared Leto's casting as the Hatbox Ghost was not his decision. How Hatbox Ghost Redeemed Jared Leto's Joker Failure

The majority of the work for that role involved voiceover. Working with Disney can be quite uncertain, as you never really know where your contribution fits into their grand franchise plans and the overall picture they're building. However, with Jared, it was different. It was clear from the start that he would be playing the role. I was pleasantly surprised by how open he was to collaboration, allowing us to explore the physicality of the character while he focused on his own preparations. Even during the recording sessions, he fully embodied the character, wearing the required teeth and hat. He was invested in finding the right physicality and creating a complete character for us to animate. Not only was this a voiceover job, but it also involved motion capture for his face. Additionally, his performance was enhanced by stunt work and CGI, with various artists contributing to the final result. Throughout the entire process, Jared remained wonderfully collaborative, which I greatly appreciated. I found his portrayal of the character to be incredibly interesting, eccentric, delightful, and suitably villainous for a Disney film. The entire production went smoothly, which is not always the case when working with a big studio and inheriting a casting choice. However, I genuinely believe that Jared was exceptional and a pleasure to work with.

The Surprising Truth Behind Jared Leto's Haunted Mansion Casting – Director's Choice or Chilling Coincidence?

Following his controversial portrayal of the Joker in the DC Extended Universe, Leto took on the role of Haunted Mansion. This came after receiving mixed reviews for his reprisal of the character in Zack Snyder's Justice League in 2021. Despite hopes for redemption in the comic book genre with Morbius in 2022, Leto's performance in the Sony's Spider-Man Universe received even harsher criticism than his previous appearances in the DCEU.

Leto's portrayal of the Joker in Suicide Squad received mixed reviews. One significant criticism was his character design, which differed greatly from the comic book version. He had a grill in his teeth and several tattoos, including the controversial "damaged" across his forehead. His performance divided both critics and audiences, with some praising his ability to capture the chaotic essence of the Batman villain, while others unfavorably compared him to Heath Ledger's acclaimed performance in The Dark Knight. However, both supporters and detractors agreed that he was underutilized in the film, with many of his scenes not making it into the final cut.

Leto's portrayal of the Hatbox Ghost in Haunted Mansion may not have had as much screen time as his role in DCEU, but it effectively redeemed his failure as the Joker. By capturing the ghoulish dark humor of the ride while maintaining a constant sense of menace throughout the movie, Leto met audience expectations for the character and avoided creating controversy.
