The team behind the massively successful adaptation of the Super Mario Bros. video game series, Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, have been chosen to write a new revival for The Flintstones. Their previous work on The Super Mario Bros. Movie garnered over $1 billion in box office earnings, making them the ideal candidates for a project of this scale. The Flintstones, originally aired from 1960 to 1966, will be adapted into Meet the Flintstones, a movie that will delve into the origins of the beloved family. While details remain scarce, it has been confirmed that the movie will be animated, in contrast to the previous live-action adaptation of The Flintstones which, although successful at the box office, failed to impress critics.
What Could A Flintstones Revival Look Like?
The Flintstones franchise has been absent from pop culture for quite some time, with the original series ending in 1966 and subsequent revivals struggling to gain traction outside of the UK Yabba-Dabba Dinosaurs spin-off. However, this presents an opportunity for an origin movie to reintroduce the beloved characters to a new audience. With little familiarity among younger viewers, an origin story could be the key to success. Unfortunately, the announcement of a Bedrock spin-off in development by Warner Bros. Animation may overshadow this potential movie. The spin-off has already announced its star-studded cast, including Elizabeth Banks, Nicole Byer, and Joe Lo Truglio.
Expect Meet the Flintstones to delve into the origins of the beloved characters, potentially exploring how Fred and Wilma fell in love and started a family, the early friendship between Fred and Barney, and the creation of Bedrock itself. Stay tuned for more updates as the project progresses.
