The 2023 Miss Universe pageant is set to occur tonight in the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador. (It will be broadcasted at 8 p.m. ET on the Roku Channel in the United States.) A total of 84 contestants, each representing their respective countries, will compete for the title, although most will only have a brief appearance. At the commencement of the competition, the participants will be narrowed down to 20 semi-finalists, chosen based on their performance in the preliminary stage of the pageant and, in one instance, a worldwide fan vote.

As the night progresses, the number of contestants will decrease until only 10 are left competing for the Miss Universe title. During the evening gown round, tradition dictates that the eliminated beauty queens walk the stage together, showcasing their looks. This moment, however, is usually brief and carefully choreographed, offering a glimpse of the sequins, corsets, and fishtail trains. Nonetheless, each contestant had their own runway moment during the preliminary proceedings, allowing them to showcase their fashion choices. Explore some of the notable sartorial highlights in the gallery above.

Key moments from the national costume competition at the 2023 Miss Universe pageant featured remarkable individuals. Among the contestants were two transgender women, Rikkie Kollé from the Netherlands and Marina Machete from Portugal. Additionally, the competition included two married women, Camila Avella from Colombia and Michelle Cohn from Guatemala. Another noteworthy participant was Jane Garrett from Nepal, who captivated the audience during the preliminary rounds as the first plus-size model ever to be in the running.
The 2023 Miss Universe pageant will also be the last year for Paula Shugart as the President of the Miss Universe Organization. After serving in the role for 23 years, Shugart announced her resignation on Thursday, stating that her decision had been in the works for several months and was not a result of recent events. Last week, the pageant's owners, JKN Global Group, filed for bankruptcy, but assured that it would not impact this year's pageant or the future of the organization.
"In my resignation speech, I emphasized that Miss Universe is not solely about one woman; it is about our community," Shugart expressed. "Our community includes the dedicated fans, the titleholders, and the national directors who have remained devoted to this brand through thick and thin."
