Young Sheldon season 6 unveiled the alarming impact The Big Bang Theory had on Sheldon's sister, Missy (Raegan Revord). Despite only making sporadic appearances on the geek-centric sitcom, Missy became a recognizable character. However, Young Sheldon now challenges the belief that this version of Missy grew up to be the one seen on The Big Bang Theory.
In a departure from solely focusing on Sheldon, Young Sheldon expands its storytelling to highlight the Cooper family as a whole. This includes Missy, who has garnered a loyal fan base. Although she may not possess her twin brother's academic prowess, Missy exhibits intelligence in other areas of life. Her quick wit, charisma, and social skills are noteworthy. Furthermore, Missy displays an emotional maturity beyond her years, offering support to her family members during their individual struggles in the conclusion of Young Sheldon season 5.
The Problem With Missy After Young Sheldon
In Young Sheldon season 6, episode 2, the notion that Missy, Sheldon's sister, possesses intellectual giftedness is introduced. While attempting to secure a part-time job at a local comic book store, Missy impresses the manager by accurately recalling Sheldon's detailed explanation of the X-Men. This highlights her exceptional memory retention, matching that of her brilliant brother. With this natural talent, combined with her ingenuity and impressive social skills, it is difficult to fathom how she ultimately becomes the least successful among the Cooper siblings, as established in The Big Bang Theory.
Missy's appearances on The Big Bang Theory were limited, with one in season 1 and another a decade later in season 11 for Sheldon's wedding to Amy. In her final cameo, it is revealed that she was experiencing marital issues and was unhappy about unintentionally becoming pregnant with their second child. However, thanks to insights from older Sheldon's narration on Young Sheldon, it is unveiled that Missy eventually finds happiness as she remarries and expands her family with more children.
Older Sheldon refrains from providing detailed information about his sister's fate, sparking theories that she might have ended up with Raj (played by Kunal Nayyar) after the two reconnected during Sheldon and Amy's wedding. In Young Sheldon season 5, Missy was sidelined and reduced to a supporting character, devoid of a compelling story arc. However, things took a turn in season 6 as both Missy and Sheldon entered their teenage years, paving the way for numerous narrative possibilities for her character. Hence, even though Young Sheldon cannot alter the course of her life due to The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon's sister can have a remarkable journey on the prequel spin-off.
Young Sheldon Season 6 Only Makes Missy A Better Character
The sixth season of Young Sheldon demonstrates significant improvement in terms of the storyline for Missy, Sheldon's sister, who now enjoys a more prominent role. However, this also highlights the misstep that occurred in Big Bang Theory when it depicted Missy's future personality. Despite her limited appearances in the sixth season, she resumes a full-time character status. One of the remarkable aspects of Missy's character this season is her growing awareness of her family's struggles and her realization of how others perceive them, even if Sheldon himself fails to recognize it.
However, there were a few moments in the season that shed light on why Missy never seemed intelligent or likeable on Big Bang Theory. This particular season witnessed an increase in conflicts between Sheldon and Missy, making it evident that she no longer wanted Sheldon around at home. She began to rebel, fully aware that he would try to intervene, and constantly felt neglected by her mother throughout the season. This led her to believe that Sheldon was the favored child.
In season 6, it was Missy who made tremendous efforts to persuade Sheldon not to give up hope and to accept his acceptance to the summer program in Germany. However, her intentions were far from those of a caring sister. Missy simply wanted Sheldon out of the picture. It had become the norm for Sheldon's sister to possess far superior social skills compared to him, using them to manipulate him and get him to comply with her desires, often without his awareness. Young Sheldon has demonstrated that Missy may not have been as unintelligent as portrayed on Big Bang Theory, and has been manipulating Sheldon all along.
