The once-romantic relationship between Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears took a turbulent turn when they ended their relationship. They first crossed paths on The All New Mickey Mouse Club in the early 1990s, but in 2002, they parted ways. Shortly after, Timberlake released his song "Cry Me a River," which included a music video that seemingly depicted their breakup, with a model resembling Spears. The video also hinted at the possibility of Spears being unfaithful to the former member of 'NSync.
“He called me and supposedly wanted to reconcile, but he also mentioned that I was featured in an upcoming video," Spears disclosed to Rolling Stone in 2003. "He slipped it in as if it was no big deal, saying not to worry about it."
During that time, Spears also revealed that Timberlake's record label offered her the opportunity to veto the song before its release, but she declined. "I thought, 'It's your video'," she recalled telling the magazine, acknowledging that Timberlake had referred to it as "controversial." Speaking to Rolling Stone, she added, "He got what he wanted. Personally, it seems like a desperate move to me. But it was a clever way to promote the album. He's cunning."
A decade later, Spears revealed in her memoir, Woman in Me, a different perspective. As reported in an October 2023 excerpt obtained by TMZ, she alleged that Timberlake had been unfaithful with a fellow celebrity. (Timberlake has yet to respond to these recent allegations.)

No Judgment?
Shortly after “Cry Me a River” dropped, Timberlake was asked if it was inspired by Spears and the cheating rumors.
“We’re not flawless. I refrain from passing judgment on anyone," he shared with Barbara Walters in 2002. "It's simply a case of young love. It was an extremely passionate relationship, without a doubt."

One year later, Diane Sawyer spoke with Spears about causing Timberlake “so much pain” and “suffering” when they broke up.
He Said, She Said
: In 2003, the Crossroads actress expressed her temporary sadness. She acknowledged their young age and viewed their breakup as something that was bound to occur. While she will always have love for him, she also emphasized that he is a wonderful person. She neither outright condemned nor completely endorsed his actions.“When we first separated, I perceived that she had a few instances where she could have defended me, but she chose not to, which I accept," Timberlake told GQ in 2006. "However, during that period, I retaliated."
Still Bad Blood
Seven years later, Timberlake revived the accusations of infidelity when he sang "Cry Me a River" during a live concert. Addressing the audience in 2013, he expressed, "In life, you sometimes believe you've found your soulmate. But then one day, you discover that she is nothing more than a derogatory term."
Shortly after, Timberlake refuted claims that his statement was directed at Spears. He cleared the air with a tweet, stating, "Alright, I understand your concern. I would never personally disrespect ANYONE. Ever. #Relax #ItsBritneyBitch I must admit, though, I find that saying quite amusing *with an accent*. #Respect."

In his 2018 book, Hindsight: & All the Things I Can’t See in Front of Me, Timberlake shared the story behind the creation of his hit song "Cry Me a River". He revealed that he wrote the song in just two hours, driven by intense emotions of being scorned and angry. Writing the song became a way for him to express his feelings and connect with others who have experienced similar situations in their lives.
Saying Sorry
Following the release of multiple TV documentaries centered on Spears' conservatorship controversy, Timberlake publicly expressed remorse "for instances in my past where my behavior added to the issue."
Taking to Instagram in February 2021, Timberlake admitted to his failure in speaking up on her behalf during their breakup and her subsequent struggles.
He further expressed his motivation to respond, as everyone involved deserves better and, more importantly, because this is a significant discussion he genuinely wants to be a part of and learn from.
Acknowledging the flaws in the industry, he highlighted how it favors men, particularly white men, and emphasized his responsibility to speak out as someone in a privileged position. Timberlake recognized his past ignorance in not fully understanding the systemic issues at play in his own life, but he expressed his determination to never benefit from others being brought down again.
Putting Pen to Paper
In her memoir, Woman in Me, Spears made the allegation that Timberlake had been unfaithful to her with a well-known woman. TMZ reported that Spears chose not to disclose the person's identity due to her current family situation.
