The character Dexter Morgan in the series Dexter, which has gained a significant fan following, was actually inspired by a real-life murderer. The highly acclaimed Showtime series revolves around a captivating storyline where a charming serial killer works as a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police. This intriguing concept was initially introduced in a novel called Darkly Dreaming Dexter, written by Jeff Lindsay and published in 2004. Showtime then transformed this narrative into a 12-episode season in 2006, which eventually led to a total of 96 episodes spread across eight seasons. Additionally, a spinoff series titled Dexter: New Blood was also created.
Despite its inspiration from a real-life murderer, Dexter is still regarded as a completely original work of fiction. The story of Dexter Morgan, portrayed by Michael C. Hall, may seem too fantastical to be grounded in reality, but surprisingly, that is not the case. In the series, Dexter seems to have it all - a loving family, loyal colleagues, and a happy life in a sunny and tropical environment, thanks to the creation of James Manos Jr. However, the real-life Dexter Morgan had a much less comfortable existence compared to the fictional character. Nonetheless, both of these vigilantes with a dark side share unique ethical perspectives that allow them to utilize their inner demons for revenge and the betterment of society.
Dexter Morgan Was Inspired By Pedro Rodrigues Filho
Pedro Rodrigues Filho, a Brazilian native, is known as a real-life vigilante killer who served as the inspiration for the fictional character Dexter Morgan. Often referred to as the "South American Punisher" and the "Brazilian Dexter," Pedro gained notoriety for his spree of killings targeting criminals and gang members. His murderous rampage began when he was only 14 years old and continued until he reached the age of 19. Just like Dexter, Pedro adhered to a code, only eliminating individuals who had committed heinous crimes.
Both Pedro and Dexter experienced disturbing urges during their young adult years and acted upon them in different ways. Additionally, both characters faced the tragedy of losing their significant other and sought revenge by targeting those responsible. In the television series, Dexter's partner Rita is brutally murdered by the Trinity Killer, Arthur Mitchell, shortly before their honeymoon. Although Dexter manages to locate and eliminate the Trinity Killer, the damage has already been done. Similarly, Pedro embarked on a path of darkness and violence after his pregnant girlfriend was killed, leading him to mercilessly slaughter an entire gang.
Pedro Rodrigues Filho's Crimes Explained
After committing his first murder at the age of 14 by shooting the mayor of a Brazilian city, Pedro's violent actions escalated during his teenage years. He joined a gang where he was coerced into killing members of rival gangs. Tragically, when his pregnant girlfriend was murdered by gang members, Pedro took it upon himself to seek revenge by hunting down and killing members of the rival gang. In addition, he sought vengeance for his mother's murder by taking the life of his own father. Shockingly, Pedro confessed to being responsible for the deaths of more than 100 individuals, including approximately 40 while he was imprisoned.
Following his arrest, Pedro was convicted on 71 counts of murder and spent three decades in prison from 1973 to 2003 (via Latin Post). Moreover, he served another prison sentence from 2011 to 2018 for charges related to rioting and deprivation of liberty. However, he was released early due to his good behavior. Surprisingly, after his second imprisonment, Pedro garnered fame as a YouTuber and TikTok star. He amassed a significant following on his TikTok page, "Pedrinho EX Matador," with over 400,000 followers and 3.4 million likes. Tragically, Pedro's life took another unexpected turn when he was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in March 2023. The case remains unsolved, and no suspects have been identified in relation to his murder.
