The Shocking Secret Steven Spielberg Almost Revealed: The Extended and Ultra-Gory Jaws Death Scene You Never Knew Existed!

Discover the untold story behind an iconic death scene in Jaws Director Steven Spielberg reveals how the scene was almost more gruesome, pushing the boundaries of gore in this legendary film

Summary

"Jaws" could have been even darker if a brutal scene featuring a victim vomiting blood while hanging from the shark's mouth wasn't cut.

Director Steven Spielberg opted to remove the scene due to its excessive gore and unsettling nature in comparison to the rest of the film. By featuring a child observing the horrifying scene, it would have intensified the film's overall dark and terrifying atmosphere.

Jaws could have been even more intense if not for one particularly brutal scene. The movie follows a terrifying shark that wreaks havoc and strikes fear in the hearts of innocent people. A police officer, biologist, and professional shark hunter are desperately trying to defeat the relentless predator. Throughout the film, there are numerous gory scenes where the shark mercilessly preys on the residents of Cape Cod. However, there was one scene that was deemed too excessive to make it into the final cut.

During an interview with Vanity Fair, director Steven Spielberg disclosed that he had to alter a scene showcasing the shark attacking its victims in the estuary. Here is his quote:

I decided to edit the scene because it was excessively bloody and gory. Stuntman Teddy Grossman, who incidentally is quite funny, portrayed the victim. Originally, the scene involved him being positioned in the mouth of the shark, resembling the figurehead of a ship, heading towards the child in the water and spewing blood. This was far more horrific than anything else in the early part of the movie, so I removed it.

In Jaws, the shark brutally kills numerous individuals, yet its portrayal on-screen has never been quite as savage. While it certainly consumes its victims, the image of a person vomiting blood while dangling from the shark's mouth is far more terrifying than what is typically shown in Jaws. Moreover, the inclusion of a child witnessing this scene only intensifies its darkness.
