The Shocking Fate of Arthur in Winter King Episode 5: Unveiling the New Ruler

Arthur's fateful act in Winter King episode 5 crowns him as Dumnonia's king, but what lies ahead for Mordred's destiny? Dive into the gripping implications of Arthur's decisive move

Summary

The Winter King episode 5 ends with a major death, making Arthur the unofficial king of Britain and solidifying his position as the de facto High King.

Arthur's ruthless defeat of Owain in a savage deathmatch serves as a resounding affirmation of his fearlessness and willingness to assume the mantle of leadership. Despite the lack of admiration from Owain's followers, Arthur's reign as king is secure for an extended period, considering that Mordred, his potential successor, is still an infant.

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for episode 5 of The Winter King season 1! In the gripping conclusion of episode 5, a significant death occurs, potentially making Arthur the unofficial ruler. This adaptation, based on Bernard Cornwell's book of the same name (The Last Kingdom), aims to ground the legend of King Arthur in a more realistic context. MGM+'s version removes much of the fantastical elements, focusing on a young Arthur (played by Iain De Caestecker) as he strives to unite the warring tribes and kingdoms against the encroaching Saxons.

Prior to his demise, Arthur's father, King Uther (portrayed by Eddie Marsan), appoints three guardians to protect his heir, Mordred, until he is old enough to assume the throne. These protectors include Bishop Bedwin (played by Steven Elder), Uther's champion Owain (portrayed by Daniel Ings), and Gundleus (portrayed by Simon Merrells), the ruler of Siluria. Unfortunately, Gundleus proves to be untrustworthy, betraying his vow and attempting to harm Mordred. In the aftermath of this treachery, Arthur declares that until Mordred ascends to the throne, Owain is technically the king of Dumnonia. However, episode 5 brings about a significant change in this arrangement.

Arthur Killing Owain Makes Him Dumnonia's King (For Now)

The Shocking Fate of Arthur in Winter King Episode 5: Unveiling the New Ruler

Despite being Arthur's supposed best friend, Owain's actions in The Winter King episode 4 reveal a dark side. In his pursuit of profit, he is implicated in the merciless slaying of innocent miners. Although Owain had intended to avoid unnecessary bloodshed, his involvement in the horrific act proves that he is not deserving of the trust placed in him. Initially thinking he had escaped detection, Owain is confronted by Prince Tristan of Kernow (Gabriel Tierney), who presents a young witness to the massacre. Accusing Owain directly, Tristan challenges him to a duel in order to ensure justice is served. Although Owain continues to deny any involvement, Arthur, upon learning the truth from a remorseful Derfel (Stuart Campbell), takes it upon himself to take Tristan's place in the duel.

Following is a brutal, bloody deathmatch between Arthur and Owain, resulting in the latter being fatally stabbed by the former. The kingdom's reaction to Arthur's actions remains to be seen, but with the assassination of the unofficial king, Arthur will be compelled to take his place. Although Arthur was already assuming that role, Owain's demise further solidifies his position.

However, Arthur's actions are unlikely to impress Owain's numerous supporters, or those who believe he returned from banishment solely to seize the kingdom for himself. Owain himself expressed this concern during the third episode, voicing apprehension about Arthur's "ambitions." Moving forward, Owain's death is likely to have repercussions, even with Arthur now being the de facto High King of Britain.

When Will Mordred Become King?

The Shocking Fate of Arthur in Winter King Episode 5: Unveiling the New Ruler

Arthur disregards Merlin's predictions of Mordred's future as a ruthless ruler and remains steadfast in his duty to protect his father's successor, despite his skepticism of such abilities. With Mordred being just an infant, Arthur will continue to hold his unofficial position for many years to come. In the second installment of the Cornwell novel series, "Enemy of God," Mordred's journey to becoming the King of Dumnonia is depicted with much anticipation. If "The Winter King" continues for multiple seasons, Arthur will still have ample time to familiarize himself with the responsibilities of the throne before his half-brother assumes control.
