Gareth Southgate expressed concern that Jordan Henderson would feel disappointed if England's LGBTQ+ supporters disassociated themselves from the team if he played against Ukraine on Saturday. Henderson, who strongly advocated for LGBTQ+ rights during his tenure as Liverpool captain, has faced extensive criticism for his decision to join Saudi club Al Ettifaq in the summer transfer window. It should be noted that homosexuality is prohibited in Saudi Arabia and can carry the penalty of capital punishment.
After being chosen by England manager Southgate for the September internationals, Henderson faced a backlash from England's LGBTQ+ supporters group Three Lions Pride. They declared that if Henderson were to represent his country once more, they would symbolically turn their backs on the pitch, expressing their dissatisfaction with how they perceive him to have treated them.

When asked about the protest, Southgate responded, "Jordan conveyed his sadness if that's how they feel. His sentiment towards that community remains the same.
"As a team, I am confident that all of our supporters will rally behind us once the game commences.
"I acknowledge and value the comments that have been expressed, while also recognizing the expressed support for the team during matches. I have confidence that the support will extend to Jordan once the game commences."
Trent Alexander-Arnold's injury creates a possibility for Henderson to be considered as a potential partner for Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in the England midfield during Saturday's match. Alternatively, Conor Gallagher, Kalvin Phillips, James Maddison, Phil Foden, and Eberechi Eze are also potential choices.
When asked about the possibility of removing Henderson from the spotlight, Southgate responded by saying that team selection is not influenced by external reactions. He highlighted Henderson's extensive experience and maturity in handling various situations. Southgate also mentioned that Henderson has had a good week of training, as has the entire team, and expressed satisfaction with everyone's availability.
What Henderson said this week
Revisiting Henderson's 2021 statements upon his relocation to Saudi Arabia reveals his astonishment at the concept of a location that segregates individuals based on their identity. In a recent interview with The Athletic, the English midfielder justified his choice to relocate to Saudi Arabia, acknowledging his strong conviction that it was the correct decision.
"All I have ever endeavored to do is provide assistance," Henderson expressed during the interview. "And whenever I have been called upon for help, I have consistently gone the extra mile. I have actively participated in their causes, taken on leadership responsibilities, and engaged with individuals from that community, all in an effort to utilize my influence for their benefit. That has always been my primary objective."
I won't waste time questioning, "Why are they criticizing me?" I comprehend it. These thoughts were already on my mind, and their opinions do matter to me.
When I hear comments like, "You've abandoned us," it truly hurts. I genuinely care. I have loved ones and friends who belong to the LGBTQ+ community. I am confident in my identity and my beliefs. However, I understand that not everyone will understand that. Therefore, I can only offer my apologies to those who feel that way.

England will take on Ukraine in the Polish city of Wroclaw
Southgate anticipates a fervent and biased ambiance as his England team gets ready to confront Ukraine in Wroclaw, Poland.
Due to the invasion of Russia in early 2022, a multitude of citizens sought refuge in Wroclaw, Poland, resulting in a significant Ukrainian community. Over the last 18 months, the Ukrainian population in Poland has tripled, making this match the closest semblance to a home game for Ukraine's national team.
"We are aware that there are hundreds and thousands of Ukrainians residing here," stated Southgate. "We anticipate an enthusiastic and biased support.
"We are accustomed to playing in such atmospheres and approach the occasion with respect. Our objective is to secure a victory in the football match."
On a broader scale, discussing football, we find ourselves facing a challenging match. Our team holds great respect for our opponents. Several of their players have experience in England, and we are familiar with some of them. We acknowledge that only by performing at our utmost best can we secure the desired victory."
