Ray Liotta had the opportunity to play Batman in Tim Burton's 1989 film but passed it up, a decision he would later regret.

Liotta initially dismissed the role due to the unfavorable reputation of superhero movies at the time. Eventually, Michael Keaton was chosen as Batman, showcasing his ability, but pondering the outcome had Liotta taken on the role is intriguing considering his acting prowess.

Ray Liotta, the legendary actor who sadly passed away on May 26, 2022, recently disclosed that he had been offered the chance to portray Batman in Tim Burton's iconic 1989 film. However, Liotta didn't think highly of superhero movies back then, which led him to decline the role—a decision he later came to regret.

Before his death, Liotta informed Deadline that he had no interest in portraying Batman due to the immense success of one of his early films. "When Something Wild was released, it garnered a lot of attention. Shortly after, my agent contacted me informing that Tim Burton wanted to meet me. He was working on a film called Batman, which was one of the first superhero films to ever be made," Liotta reminisced. "I outright exclaimed, 'Are you f***ing nuts? Batman?!' I couldn't comprehend it and thought it was a foolish idea. However, the foolish one was me, as I was simply unaware."

The Batman role, instead, went to Michael Keaton, which caused controversy due to his comedic background. Fans strongly disagreed with his casting initially. However, Keaton ultimately proved to be a suitable choice for the role. His portrayal of the reserved Bruce Wayne effectively conveyed the character's deep trauma resulting from his parents' death. Although Liotta passed on the role, he found great success the following year with his portrayal of Henry Hill in Goodfellas. It is uncertain if Liotta would have been chosen for the Batman role had he shown interest.

One can't help but ponder how Liotta would have fared in the Batman role. His exceptional performance as a character transitioning from an optimistic aspiring gangster to a troubled, drug-addicted individual burdened by paranoia from both the mafia and law enforcement in Goodfellas showcased his talent. Despite the distinct differences between playing Batman and Hill, Liotta's acting abilities made his transformation in Goodfellas highly convincing, suggesting he could have portrayed The Caped Crusader convincingly.

There have been several controversial Batman castings in the past, with Ben Affleck being initially ridiculed but eventually winning over audiences in the disastrous Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice. Similarly, Robert Pattinson faced skepticism when cast as a younger Batman. The character holds such great sentimental value for fans that questions arise regardless of who is cast. Affleck, Pattinson, and even Keaton had previously faced doubts that were eventually proven wrong. Unfortunately, fans will never know what Liotta could have brought to the role. Batman is available for streaming on Max.
