Highlights
Jessica went against the wishes of the Bene Gesserit and chose to have a son instead of a daughter with Duke Leto Atreides. Despite their orders, she defied convention. She then proceeded to teach her son, Paul, the ways of the Bene Gesserit, which emphasized the development of astute observational skills.
The Reverend Mother uses the Gom Jabbar Test of Humanity on Paul to determine his human nature. Despite enduring excruciating pain, Paul demonstrates his competence in surpassing his primal instincts.
The Bene Gesserit organization implements a targeted breeding initiative aimed at creating the Kwisatz Haderach, a being endowed with the power to access genetic memory and predict future events. Jessica's choice to give birth to a son rather than a daughter challenges the authority of the Bene Gesserit hierarchy.
In Dune, Jessica is introduced as a member of the Bene Gesserit, an enigmatic all-female order consisting of spies, scientists, nuns, and theologians. She is Duke Leto Atreides I's official concubine and the mother of their son, Paul Atreides, who is the heir to the ducal title. Jessica has been training Paul in the intricacies of the Bene Gesserit Way, which Frank Herbert's Dune describes as an emphasis on keen observation. This explains why Paul is able to notice even the smallest details and clues in people and his surroundings, which others may overlook.
Early in the story, Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam visits Castle Caladan to administer a grueling Bene Gesserit human test on the fifteen-year-old Paul. While waiting for Jessica and Paul, she reflects on her thoughts in Jessica's morning room.
Jessica is the source of my frustration! I wish she had obeyed our command and given birth to a girl, as she was instructed to do.
Previously, Jessica served as a teacher at the prestigious Bene Gesserit school. However, she now holds the influential role of the Emperor's Truthsayer, bestowed upon her by the Reverend Mother. Despite her elevated position, the Reverend Mother's anger towards Jessica for disregarding the Bene Gesserit's directives by having a son with Duke Leto Atreides I still lingers. She scolds Jessica vehemently for delivering a boy instead.
The Gom Jabbar Test Of Humanity And Its Implications
The Reverend Mother Gaius Helen Mohiam is at Castle Caladan for reasons of obligation, or as Dune puts it:
"...a mission that required personal attention from a Bene Gesserit-with-the-Sight."
Paul keenly notices his mother's impeccable manners and profound admiration for the "old woman." He witnesses his mother's awe-filled gaze towards her, observing as Lady Jessica of the Bene Gesserit dutifully follows the Reverend Mother's instructions to leave and shut the door. Interestingly, the Reverend Mother, with a harsh demeanor, dismisses Lady Jessica before subjecting Paul to the excruciating Gom Jabbar Test of Humanity. Even after Paul withstands the burning agony it brings, the Reverend Mother continues to berate Lady Jessica. This highly specific and intensely painful test is conducted on Paul to discern his humanity, asserting that:
"A human possesses the ability to surpass any sensation in the body."
Is he the chosen one? Could he truly be the one?
However, the Reverend Mother anchors herself in reality by reminding herself, "Hope clouds observation."
The Bene Gesserit Breeding Program
When Jessica is summoned, the Reverend Mother informs her about the establishment of schools that aimed to train human abilities following the Great Revolt, also known as the Butlerian Jihad. This rebellion was a crusade against computers, thinking machines, and conscious robots. Among the few surviving ancient schools are the Bene Gesserit and the Spacing Guild, which holds a monopoly on space travel. The Bene Gesserit silently wields political power in the world of Dune. Their testing for humans is imperative as it ensures the separation of superior human genetics from lesser animal genetics, a necessary process for preserving their bloodline.
The Order's main objective is to employ a meticulous breeding program with the aim of creating a remarkable being known as the Kwisatz Haderach. This male member of the Bene Gesserit possesses the extraordinary ability, as expressed by the Reverend Mother in Dune, to delve into the histories of both genders, surpassing our own limitations.
In simpler terms, he would possess the power to tap into the genetic memories of his male and female ancestors, as well as the ability to glimpse into the future. Paul's mother, Lady Jessica, is part of a breeding program and is assigned to House Atreides. The purpose of the program is for her to only give birth to Atreides daughters. These daughters would then be married into the rival House, specifically to a Harkonnen heir, in order to bring about the Kwisatz Haderach. The Bene Gesserit have a vested interest in controlling this superbeing, as it would grant them control over the entire universe.
By marrying an Atreides daughter to a Harkonnen heir, the conflict between the two houses could have been resolved.
Jessica willed herself to bear a son, prioritizing the Duke's desire and disregarding the disapproval of the hierarchical Bene Gesserit leaders. Additionally, she recognized the potential to give birth to the Kwisatz Haderach. Importantly, it should be noted that the Bene Gesserit possess control over their fertility and the ability to select the gender of their offspring, along with other abilities. As Paul establishes his status as the Kwisatz Haderach by undermining the Bene Gesserit, Lady Jessica reveals that female independence in the world of Dune holds a greater complexity than initially perceived.
