The Romantic Journey of Idris Elba and Sabrina Elba: A Tale of 'Love At First Sight'

Idris Elba, who once vowed never to marry again, had a change of heart when he met Sabrina Elba, his future wife.

"It was love at first sight," Idris shared during an appearance on The View in 2019. "I went out on my only day off, a true story. It was a Sunday night. I went to this party, and there she was. The rest, as they say, is history."

In 2017, while filming The Mountain Between Us in Vancouver with Kate Winslet, Idris had some free time. He decided to visit a jazz bar and that's where he first saw Sabrina, the former Miss Vancouver.

Before Sabrina, Idris was married to Hanne “Kim” Norgaard from 1999 to 2003. They have a daughter named Isan. He was also briefly married to Sonya Nicole Hamlin in 2006.

Idris and Sabrina, who had previously sworn off marriage, tied the knot in Morocco in 2019. Their bond has only grown stronger as they have collaborated on various projects together.

Idris Elba had always said he wouldn't marry again, but everything changed when he met Sabrina Elba.

Idris shared on The View in 2019 that he fell in love at first sight. He recalled going out on his only day off, which happened to be a Sunday night. At a party, he laid eyes on someone special, and the rest is history.

Back in 2017, Idris was in Vancouver filming The Mountain Between Us with Kate Winslet. During a break in his busy schedule, he visited a jazz bar where he first saw the former Miss Vancouver.

Idris was previously married to Hanne “Kim” Norgaard and Sonya Nicole Hamlin. He shares a daughter named Isan with Hanne, and their marriage lasted from 1999 to 2003. His marriage to Sonya lasted less than a year in 2006.

2017

The actor from The Wire met the former beauty queen at a party in Vancouver during a movie shoot.

They then made their first red carpet appearance together later that year at the Toronto International Film Festival for the premiere of Idris’ film Molly’s Game.

The twosome went on to attend the premiere of The Mountain Between Us, the film that brought them together.

2018

The actor who was nominated for an Emmy asked Sabrina to marry him at the Rio Cinema in London. The movie theater confirmed the news by tweeting, "Another @riocinema first! Still 5 days to Valentine's Day but @idriselba went down on one knee and proposed to his girlfriend live on stage this morning before a preview of his film #Yardie," and included a selfie of Idris.

2019

In April 2019, the couple were married in Morocco and had a three-day celebration for the special occasion.

Getting married to my lovely wife in 2019 was the highlight of the year for me, Idris mentioned during the Cats premiere in New York City. It was amazing to have our families with us on that special day.

2020

At the beginning of the pandemic, both Goodwill Ambassadors tested positive for COVID-19 and decided to quarantine together.

Sabrina shared in an interview with Grazia UK that Idris, who has asthma and is older, was really scared at one point and thought it could be the end.

2021

After celebrating their second anniversary, the couple decided to launch their lifestyle brand, S’able Labs, and a podcast series called "Coupledom."

2022

In February 2022, Idris Elba, known for his role in Hobbs and Shaw, shared his desire to shift his focus from acting to music. He recently dropped a new track called "Biggest" under the name "Driis" and even had his wife in the music video.

2024

Sabrina looked back on her marriage to Idris while on The Jennifer Hudson Show in April 2024. She expressed amazement that they had been together for seven years and married for five.

Describing their wedding day in Morocco, she shared, “It felt like the party of your dreams, with all your loved ones present. The energy and love from them made it the most unforgettable night.”

Sabrina added: “It goes by so fast. I can’t even believe it. I feel like it was, like, yesterday.”
