Fairphone, renowned for its eco-friendly devices, is introducing the Fairphone 4 to the United States. However, there will be some differences compared to its international counterparts. Murena, a company specializing in de-Googled Android smartphones, is collaborating with Fairphone for the US release. As a result, the Fairphone 4 in the US will not have access to Google Play Store or any Google apps. Instead, it will operate on /e/OS, a privacy-focused variant of the Android operating system.
The /e/OS operating system is renowned for its efforts to provide a user-friendly experience for Android users without Google apps. It incorporates microG, a streamlined version of the Google Play Services app, which offers essential functionalities to ensure that apps remain functional while minimizing reliance on Google. Although the Play Store is not accessible on /e/OS, you can still install the necessary apps via sideloading, as microG support ensures their compatibility. Additionally, /e/OS features a built-in store that retrieves apps from the Play Store, including Google apps, if desired. However, please note that this is technically against Google's terms and conditions, so it is advisable to utilize a new account instead of your regular Google account to avoid potential account bans.

However, some may regard this as a step backward compared to the Fairphone 4 available in other countries, as that particular phone fully embraces Google apps. Nonetheless, this development is highly beneficial for privacy advocates who prefer a phone that doesn't rely on Google's apps and services, but still functions seamlessly.
The Fairphone 4 sold internationally is essentially the same as the one available in the US, with the only difference being the support provided by Google. It offers a generous storage capacity of up to 256GB and a RAM of 8GB. The phone comes with a removable 3,905 mAh battery, and its components are easily repairable and replaceable. Disassembling the phone requires only a standard Philips #00 screwdriver. The starting price for the device is $599 for the 6GB/128GB variant, while the 8GB/256GB version is available for $679.
