Join renowned San Francisco detective Adrian Monk (Tony Shalhoub) for another murder case as he uses his skills to solve a horrible accident that implicates murder. In "Mr. Monk’s Last Case," Monk is determined to bring the killer to justice.
After 14 years since solving the biggest case of his career - Trudy’s murder, Monk is finally free of guilt and ready to move on with his life. He discovers the truth about Judge Rickover and forms a bond with Molly.
After the pandemic, Monk comes out of retirement in "Mr. Monk's Last Case" when Molly's fiancé is killed in what appears to be an accident. However, Monk and Molly (portrayed by Caitlin McGee) suspect otherwise. With the original team reuniting to assist Monk, he must overcome personal obstacles to apprehend the murderer. As Monk would say, "here's what happened." Warning: Spoilers ahead!
Molly’s fiancé angers a powerful millionaire
The day of Molly’s eagerly anticipated wedding has arrived and all her loved ones have gathered to celebrate with her. However, tragedy strikes when her husband-to-be attempts his traditional bungee jump and suffers a fatal accident.
Monk is fretting over how to finance Molly’s wedding, but that soon becomes the least of his worries. Molly’s fiancé, journalist Griffin (played by Austin Scott), is working on a story about billionaire Rick Eden (portrayed by James Purefoy). Instead of a puff piece, Griffin aims to expose Eden's dishonesty. During their meeting, Griffin shows a photo supposedly depicting the death of Eden’s former business partner during a scuba diving accident in Barbados. Official reports stated the partner drowned after being warned not to dive alone, but Griffin’s enlarged photo suggests that Rick was present during the tragedy.
Although shaken, Rick remains calm and offers Griffin a substantial sum of money and a job. Griffin declines. Days before the wedding, their home is broken into. The next day, Griffin prepares his bungee jumping gear, meticulously measuring the length of the rope as he always does. He has never missed a jump and knows the precise measurement required.
Is Rick the killer?
The day of the jump arrives, and everything appears as usual. Griffin takes the leap from the bridge, causing Molly to avert her gaze until she is shocked by gasps. The rope turns out to be too long, failing to stop at the necessary point and sending Griffin plummeting to the ground. Molly becomes convinced that Rick is to blame. After all, he had inherited his partner’s portion of the company, which was worth millions.
Monk remains skeptical until they reach the bridge. Molly remembers a man mentioning that the rope was six feet too long, a detail that piques Monk's interest. When Molly adds that the man had his two index fingers painted white, Monk quickly realizes that it is something baseball players do. Randy goes to search for potential suspects as the others enter the garage.
Monk becomes convinced that it was murder after noticing that the previously painted-shut window was now open and the trophies on the windowsill are in disarray. Randy discloses that the man in question is a delivery driver for Rick's company. Upon visiting Rick's home, they encounter Stottlemeyer, who is the head of security. Stottlemeyer, who has grown close to Rick, does not believe he is the killer.
While in Rick's office, he noticed a magazine featuring Griffin, a dangerous sports enthusiast. Despite being aware of the delivery driver who was present at Griffin's death, Rick denies knowing him. Video footage from that day also confirms that the two men never interacted, but it is revealed that the driver has a significant criminal record.
Stottlemeyer becomes convinced that Rick is the killer after watching CCTV footage of him and the driver conversing. Monk becomes intrigued by a new article about a dog shelter receiving threats and becomes perplexed by the connection. Upon seeing threatening letters at the shelter, Monk recalls the address and handwriting from a post-it note on Rick's desk. As he leaves, he and Natalie spot the delivery driver on his route. It is revealed that Rick selected a random business on the driver's route to send threatening letters to and planted a bomb that would detonate when the driver reached the dog shelter.
Monk puts the pieces together of the murder case
After the driver's demise, Monk attempts to pilfer Rick's laptop at a party but is unsuccessful and ends up tumbling over a cliff into the ocean. Molly is on the verge of giving up when evidence tying Rick to the murder is nowhere to be found. It isn't until Monk has a sudden realization. While conversing with the twin funeral directors, he notices that their heads differ in size by a quarter-inch.
Upon seeing the two measuring tapes together, he immediately understands what Rick had done. Rick was aware of Griffin's routine bungee jump and his habit of personally gauging the length of the rope. To sabotage Griffin, he paid a driver to break into Griffin and Molly’s residence and meddle with the measuring tape. The altered tape was only slightly longer, a minute difference that would go unnoticed by anyone.
Griffin proceeded to measure his rope as he usually did, unaware that the tampered tape had added more length than anticipated, resulting in the rope being six feet longer than intended.
