The Remarkable Andes Miracle Film to Watch Following Society of the Snow

The gripping survival thriller Society of the Snow has captivated Netflix users, but have you seen the remarkable 'Miracle in the Andes' movie that predates it? Prepare to be spellbound by this must-watch tale of endurance

Have you watched "Miracle in the Andes" before diving into the new survival thriller "Society of the Snow" on Netflix? Directed by J.A. Bayona, this harrowing true story is now available for streaming.

The movie follows the story of a Uruguayan flight that crashes in the Andes in 1972, as the survivors are forced to rely on each other for hope and survival. Known as the 'Miracle in the Andes,' the film offers a unique perspective on this compelling story - here's why it's worth watching.

The movie you should watch after Society of the Snow

Before Society of the Snow, there was 1993’s Alive, which also chronicles the nightmarish ordeal of Flight 571.

The movie's official synopsis states that a Uruguayan rugby team must resort to extreme measures in order to survive after their flight crashes into the Andes mountain range. In contrast to Society of the Snow, which was adapted from the book La sociedad de la nieve by Pablo Vierci, Alive was based on Piers Paul Read’s 1974 book Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors.

The cast of Alive includes Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton, Vincent Spano, Gian DiDonna, Josh Lucas, Michael DeLorenzo, and Sam Behrens. The movie is directed by Frank Marshall, who is also known for Congo and Eight Below.

Alive grossed $36.7 million in the US and Canada and $45.8 million internationally. A companion documentary, Alive: 20 Years Later, was released at the same time.

Alive has a 61% rating on the Tomatometer on Rotten Tomatoes, with an audience score of 68%. According to Jenn Adams at Bloody Disgusting, the film is often classified as a drama and is praised for its authentic portrayal of a harrowing survival story, making it one of the best examples of true survival horror in film.

Bob Bloom of the Journal and Courier highlighted the film as "an overlooked gem, made even more powerful by the fact that it is based on a factual incident."

Felix Vasquez Jr. of Cinema Crazed also praised the film, describing it as "a pretty harrowing and rather disturbing look at the struggles of survival in the face of certain death..."

"Society of the Snow" is now available on Netflix, a modern version of Frank Marshall's "Alive" (1993) featuring Ethan Hawke. If you haven't seen the original, I highly suggest giving it a watch. pic.twitter.com/mTbHTSJvim

On social media, numerous fans have been discussing the similarities between the movie and Society of the Snow. One user on X/Twitter remarked, "J.A. Bayona's SOCIETY OF THE SNOW premiered at Venice and is now available on Netflix. It is based on the 1972 Andes plane crash, the same event as Frank Marshall's 1993 film Alive. It has also been shortlisted for Best International Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards."

"Today, Society of the Snow is available on Netflix, a remake of the 1993 film Alive directed by Frank Marshall and featuring Ethan Hawke. If you haven't seen the original, I highly recommend it," recommended another viewer. Alive can be rented or bought on various digital platforms, including Amazon Prime.

As an enthusiastic fan of survival thrillers, I was captivated by the gripping tale of "Miracle in the Andes." The movie's portrayal of the Uruguayan flight crash in 1972 and the subsequent struggles of the survivors left me in awe of their resilience and determination. The film's unique perspective on this compelling story made it a must-watch for me.

The 1993 movie "Alive," which chronicles the same nightmarish ordeal of Flight 571, is another cinematic masterpiece that deserves recognition. Based on Piers Paul Read's book, "Alive" offers an authentic portrayal of the harrowing survival story. The cast, including Ethan Hawke and Josh Hamilton, delivers powerful performances that bring the characters' struggles to life. The film's success, both critically and commercially, is a testament to its captivating storytelling and emotional impact.
