Walton Goggins, the actor who played Boyd Crowder in every season of the original Justified series, explains why his character is not part of Justified: City Primeval. Originally intended to be killed off in the premiere episode, Boyd's presence was retained due to positive feedback from executive producer Graham Yost and test audiences. Consequently, Boyd evolved from a guest character to one of the most memorable regulars on the show.

In an interview with The Wrap prior to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Goggins discussed his absence from the cast of Justified: City Primeval. He mentioned that it was not the right place and time for his return, emphasizing that the decision was not one-sided. However, Goggins does express admiration for lead actor Timothy Olyphant's portrayal of Raylan Givens and compliments on the new antagonist, Boyd Holbrook.

Premiering on July 18 on FX and available for next-day streaming on Hulu, the revival of Justified encompasses eight exciting episodes. Set ten years after the original series, our protagonist, Givens, has relocated from his hometown of Miami and now faces the challenge of balancing his role as a U.S. Marshal with his responsibilities as a parent to a 15-year-old girl, portrayed by Olyphant's real-life daughter, Vivian. However, matters become further entangled when Givens embarks on a journey to Detroit, where he crosses paths with the formidable desperado known as The Oklahoma Wildman, played by Holbrook. This elusive outlaw, known for slipping away without capture, aims to repeat history, this time with the aid of a formidable lawyer.

The supporting cast for Justified: City Primeval includes Aunjanue Ellis, Adelaide Clemens, Vondie Curtis Hall, Marin Ireland, Norbert Leo Butz, Victor Williams, Keith David, and Ravi Patel, in addition to Vivian Olyphant and Holbrook. The show, which draws inspiration from Elmore Leonard's novel City Primeval: High Noon in Detroit, is led by co-showrunners Dave Andron and Michael Dinner.

Although Goggins is not currently involved in Justified: City Primeval, there is a possibility that he may return to portray Boyd Crowder in the future. Olyphant has also expressed interest in reprising his role as Raylan Givens. Given the positive reception of the new series so far, there may be potential for FX to greenlight more seasons of this crime drama, opening the door for a potential appearance by Goggins.
