As viewers fell in love with Belly's adventures in Cousins Beach, they also became invested in the off-screen love lives of the cast members. Gavin Casalegno, who portrays Jeremiah, wanted to convey the growth of Jeremiah's feelings for Belly after years of being just friends.

“It was incredibly enjoyable to delve into the authenticity and genuineness of our relationship, particularly our romantic connection with Belly,” he expressed to J-14. “Working with Lola on screen was an absolute delight. Everything seemed to flow effortlessly. I have no doubt that viewers will adore it.”

He also commended author and showrunner Jenny Han for her portrayal of his character's exploration of his sexuality. “Jenny did a remarkable job with her writing by not making it the sole focus of the character,” Casalegno shared in an interview with Seventeen in June 2022. “It was just a delightful addition, showcasing Jenny's brilliance in updating her work to fit the present world, which is vastly different.”

"Honestly, I felt incredibly honored to contribute to the transformation and progress of our journey, embracing diversity along the way. I truly believe that having such diversity is crucial and brings something truly exceptional. Jeremiah is constantly discovering and embracing his true self, and it's a remarkable journey. I am extremely grateful to Jenny for enabling this growth entirely."

When it comes to his personal romantic life off-screen, Casalegno revealed that he is a "hopeless romantic" who enjoys making grand gestures for his girlfriend, Larsen Thompson.

"I recall the most outrageous gesture I made was when my current girlfriend celebrated her 16th birthday, and we had only been together for a week," he shared with the magazine. "I secretly purchased a plane ticket to surprise her on her special day. Her parents took her to a restaurant at Universal Studios, and I decided to make a grand entrance by pretending to propose with a Hershey's kiss. Little did I know, her father was right there, and that was the first time I met him. It was quite a hilarious moment. We can laugh about it now, but it just shows that there's no limit to the lengths I would go to make a romantic gesture."

On the other hand, his co-star Briney has chosen to keep his relationship with Isabela Rose Machado more private. In June 2022, Machado showed her support for her boyfriend by accompanying him on the red carpet at the premiere of The Summer I Turned Pretty in New York City.

Ever since the series premiered in June 2022, fans have been captivated by Belly's (played by Lola Tung) journey in Cousins Beach and her complicated love triangle with brothers Jeremiah (portrayed by Gavin Casalegno) and Conrad (played by Christopher Briney). Casalegno aimed to portray the gradual development of Jeremiah's feelings for Belly, highlighting the transition from mere friendship after many years.

During an interview with J-14, he expressed his delight in being able to authentically portray his romantic relationship with Belly and praised the genuine nature of their connection. Regarding his personal love life away from the camera, Casalegno candidly shared his romantic nature as a "hopeless romantic," someone who delights in making grand gestures for his girlfriend Larsen Thompson.

In June 2022, Machado accompanied her boyfriend to The Summer I Turned Pretty premiere in New York City, showing her support on the red carpet.
