Warning: Spoilers for Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War, episode 15
The Quincy takeover of the Soul Society in Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War was sudden and dramatic. However, it raises some questions. How did the Quincy infiltrate the Seireitei and remain hidden for a thousand years? The anime provides an explanation, albeit a complex one.
When the Quincy Wandenreich replaces the Seireitei, all the buildings instantly change, leaving the Soul Reapers without their usual advantage. The Quincy claim that they were able to do this because they were already inside the (almost) impenetrable barrier of the Seireitei, "hiding in the shadows." This response turns out to be quite literal, explaining why the Quincy were able to disappear into the shadows after their initial attack. The method they used to achieve this, however, remains unclear.
The Quincy Created A Pocket Dimension Inside the Seireitei
Quincy possess a profound skill in manipulating reishi, which are the spirit particles that compose everything and everyone in the Soul Society. Centuries ago, the Quincy discovered a method to harness reishi and construct a concealed dimension known as the "shadow realm." Situated within the shadows encircling the Seireitei, this realm provided shelter and sustenance for the Quincy, enabling them to establish a substantial city comparable in size to the Seireitei. By residing here, the Quincy of the Wandenreich successfully evaded the same fate that afflicted their counterparts in the world of the living.
Concealed within this secluded realm granted them two significant advantages. Firstly, the Soul Reapers remained oblivious to their presence due to the inconspicuous nature of the realm, rendering any suspicious investigation void. Secondly, this realm served as an opportune launching point for their actions, permitting them to strike precisely when the opportune moment arose. While not explicitly mentioned, it is plausible that the Seireitei lacked the protective barriers during the initial conflict a thousand years ago, particularly considering the absence of the 13 Court Guard Squads at the time. This factor consequently facilitated the Quincy's infiltration into the Soul Society, just as it did for their ancient predecessors.
The Quincy city existed in a distinct dimension that overlapped with the Seireitei. This allowed the Quincy to absorb the spiritual particles of the Seireitei, causing a synchronization of the dimensions and altering the hierarchy of the locations. It is still uncertain if this synchronization can be reversed, but it is hoped that the Soul Reapers will discover a solution. The Quincy and their shadow realm may be among the most perplexing scenes in Bleach: The Thousand-Year Blood War, but there is a logical explanation behind it.
