Last month's announcement of a collaboration between Sony and Nintendo to produce a live-action Legend of Zelda film sparked excitement among fans, who began speculating on potential casts and the game's storyline. Although director Wes Ball has not confirmed which game will serve as the movie's inspiration, he expressed his vision for the film. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ball stated his intention to draw inspiration from the works of legendary animation director Hayao Miyazaki and hopes to integrate Miyazaki's style into the production.
"This amazing fantasy-adventure film, Legend of Zelda, has its own unique vibe and isn't just another Lord of the Rings," he explained. "I've always said that I would love to see a live-action Miyazaki. The sense of wonder and whimsy he brings to his work is something I'd love to see in a film."
Ball, who is also a producer on the movie, is joined by Derek Connolly (known for Jurassic World) as the screenplay writer. With 25 different games made for the series, the latest installment, Tears of the Kingdom, received high praise last year and is nominated for Game of the Year.
Without divulging any specific story elements, Ball assures that the project will be incredible. "My entire life has been leading up to this moment. I grew up with Zelda and believe it is one of the most significant untapped intellectual properties. That's why we're putting in the effort to create something truly special, not just for the sake of it."
Editor's P/S
As a long-time fan of both Hayao Miyazaki's work and the Legend of Zelda series, I am incredibly excited about the potential for a live-action adaptation of the game that draws inspiration from Miyazaki's style. I believe that Miyazaki's enchanting and whimsical approach to storytelling, combined with the rich and immersive world of Zelda, could create a truly magical cinematic experience.
I am particularly interested in seeing how Ball and his team will translate the visual aesthetics of Miyazaki's films into a live-action setting. Miyazaki's films are known for their stunning visuals, which often feature lush landscapes, intricate character designs, and a sense of wonder and awe. I am confident that Ball and his team will be able to capture the essence of Miyazaki's style while also bringing their own unique vision to the project.
