Job seekers are now employing generative artificial intelligence, such as ChatGPT, to enhance their initial impression during the job search. Gartner Consulting reveals that individuals are utilizing free AI programs to customize their resumes based on the requirements of a particular employer and job description. Additionally, they are seeking assistance in crafting cover letters, generating writing samples, and providing answers on job applications.

Job seekers can leverage this tool to enhance their interview preparation in case they progress to that phase. According to career experts interviewed by CNN, utilizing AI can significantly simplify and expedite the job search process, particularly when applying to numerous positions across various organizations.

However, they cautioned against blindly relying on what AI produces as results.

"Utilize AI as a tool, but refrain from making it your sole tool. Consider the answers it provides as a framework, rather than absolute truth," advised Darci Smith, a career coach and managing partner at Roklyn Consulting, a recruitment agency specializing in financial advisers, financial planners, and their support staff.

Customize and gut check

Another way for job seekers to utilize ChatGPT is as a safety net to ensure that they have addressed all the necessary aspects in their materials. They can also seek guidance on how to rephrase certain content or emphasize their achievements more effectively.

According to career coach David Timis, seeking assistance from AI to compose resumes or cover letters, and then comparing it to their original work, is comparable to seeking advice from Google or a friend for a second opinion.

Timis, the communications manager for Generation, a global employment program that supports economically vulnerable individuals in acquiring skills for technology, sustainability, healthcare, and other fields, warned of the dangers associated with relying solely on AI for thinking. He emphasized that writing, on the other hand, is a means to enhance one's thinking ability, making AI's potential to eliminate the need for thinking a significant threat to education.

Smith said that recruiters or hiring managers can easily detect if someone is using AI to generate their answers, which can interfere with their chances of being hired.

It will become apparent during the interview if your language fluency and writing skills are not as strong as indicated in your application.

If this is the situation, Smith suggested that for technical positions that do not involve written communication with clients or customers, you could mention in the interview that you used AI to assist you in preparing your application. Then, emphasize why your existing skills make you the most suitable candidate for the position.

When AI wont help

According to Jamie Kohn, senior research director in Gartner's human resources practice, employers may have differing opinions about the use of AI. While some may have reservations, others may view it as a demonstration of resourcefulness, recognizing it simply as a tool.

However, it will be the responsibility of the interviewer to inquire about your ability to think creatively and solve problems spontaneously. According to Kohn, certain companies consider the possibility of training interviewers to ask follow-up questions that cannot be easily addressed by AI.

During the interview, you may have utilized AI to respond to a query regarding your approach to a specific scenario. However, you might also be questioned about the reasoning behind your answer, as well as how you would adapt if variables were altered. Essentially, you need to demonstrate your intellectual and technical capabilities and provide insight into your personality and work style. This evaluation goes beyond your skills and background; it assesses how harmoniously you would integrate into the company's culture.

"My clients desire a greater emphasis on the personal touch, despite the reliance on automated tools. However, companies are increasingly seeking genuine human interaction. It is a delicate equilibrium," Smith mentioned.

According to Stacie Haller, chief career adviser at ResumeBuilder, individuals applying for top-level positions may be wise to avoid relying too heavily on AI, except for a brief comparison with their existing accomplishments.

Haller observed that high-level executives often utilize AI to create their resumes, but the outcome often appears as if it was written by a recent college graduate. In the realm of C-suite positions, the focus should be on strategic planning and executing initiatives within an organization, making AI an inappropriate tool for this task.

Kohn added that the same applies to individuals seeking to embark on a new career that differs significantly from their current occupation. AI may not excel in highlighting transferable skills or effectively conveying the personal story behind the desire for a career change. It lacks the understanding of the individual's motivation and background necessary for such a task.

Despite the efficiencies brought about by new technologies like AI in the job search process, it is important to remember that many job seekers still rely on the personal touch to secure their next opportunity.

"Knowing people. The best and most common way people find their next job is through their network," Haller said.
