Article Overview
Throughout her journey on Star Trek: Voyager, Kes's telepathic abilities underwent a remarkable transformation, progressing from telepathic communication to perceiving thoughts and emotions, and ultimately extending to the manipulation of matter using her extraordinary mental powers.
The extent of Kes's powers remained undefined, causing confusion and inconsistencies throughout the show. This lack of clarity may have resulted from the creative team's struggle to handle the character and Jennifer Lien's departure from the show.
During her appearance in season 7, Kes demonstrated heightened powers, but only in a single episode, leaving viewers with a plethora of unanswered questions regarding her capabilities.
Kes (Jennifer Lien) had a prominent storyline in Star Trek: Voyager focused on her development of telepathic powers. She belonged to a secretive species called the Ocampa, who were introduced in the show's pilot episode, "Caretaker." The Ocampa, once highly skilled telepaths, had lost their abilities after becoming reliant on an alien entity known as the Caretaker. Despite this, Kes and others knew that they still had untapped telepathic potential.
After Kes left her people and joined the crew of the USS Voyager in their journey home, her telepathic abilities began to emerge and strengthen. The first indication of her powers came in the episode "Time and Again" during the first season of Voyager, and from there, they continued to develop throughout her time on the show. The full extent and limitations of her powers were never explicitly defined, but they played a significant role in Kes's storyline from the first to the third season of Voyager.
Kes’s Telepathic Powers Explained
During Voyager's first three seasons, Kes showcased various telepathic abilities that ultimately influenced her decision to leave the ship. Initially, she could only communicate telepathically with her own species, but in the episode "Time and Again," she discovered her potential to sense the thoughts and emotions of other species, even after they had departed. Encouraged by this growth, Kes began working alongside Tuvok (Tim Russ) to gain control over her powers and utilize them effectively.
Although Kes's powers remained predominantly telepathic, she went through several significant upgrades. In the Voyager episode "Cold Fire" during season 2, Kes discovered her psychokinetic abilities, enabling her to manipulate both organic and inanimate matter using her mind. As time went on, thanks to the influence of Voyager's encounter with Species 8472, Kes's powers rapidly expanded, allowing her to disrupt things at a molecular level, even affecting her own body. Eventually, this extraordinary progression led to her departure from the ship, seemingly ascending to a higher state of consciousness. However, Kes returned in the episode "Fury" during season 7, demonstrating her most advanced powers thus far, including the ability to emit neurogenic energy blasts, absorb energy, and even engage in time travel.
Why Voyager Never Clarified All Of Kes’s Abilities
Despite some development of Kes's powers in Voyager, the series failed to provide a clear understanding of her abilities. Inconsistencies with Kes as a character and Jennifer Lien's departure at the beginning of season 4 likely contributed to this. The creative team seemed uncertain about how to handle Kes, and her sudden departure from the show necessitated a quick resolution. Consequently, Kes's powers expanded rapidly and without proper explanation, leaving audiences unaware of her subsequent journey.
By keeping Kes away from Voyager following Lien's departure as a main character, it could have reduced the confusion surrounding her powers. However, bringing back the character in season 7 as an even more powerful iteration of herself for just one episode only intensified the perplexity. The limited time allotted was insufficient for explaining Kes's heightened abilities or delving deeper into the ones she did display. Consequently, Star Trek: Voyager left viewers with a greater number of unanswered questions regarding Kes's powers.

I think it's a shame that the show never fully explored the extent of Kes's powers. There were so many unanswered questions about her abilities, and I would have loved to see more of what she could do.
Overall, I think Kes was a great character, and her Ocampa abilities were a unique and interesting part of Star Trek: Voyager. I would have loved to see more of her, but I'm grateful for the time we had with her.
