Star Trek: Picard season 3's finale featured a cameo from Star Trek legend Walter Koenig. However, showrunner Terry Matalas has shed light on why Koenig did not appear on camera as President Anton Chekov. Instead, Koenig provided a voiceover as the President of the United Federation of Planets in the opening scene of "The Last Generation," the final episode of Picard season 3. As Chekov, he issues a warning about the Borg assimilating Starfleet but also emphasizes that "Hope is never lost... There are always possibilities..." Matalas shared this insight during his appearance on The 7th Rule podcast, hosted by Cirroc Lofton and Ryan T. Husk. You can read Matalas' quote and watch the video at the 37:24 time stamp below.
Walter Koenig's Picard Season 3 Cameo Gave Chekov Back To Star Trek
Wasn't that amazing? Let me just say, as a devoted fan, it was a true honor to have the opportunity to write and direct such a monumental finale. And to have him involved as well... if only we had captured it on camera! Unfortunately, time constraints prevented us from attempting that feat, but even just the audio is incredibly satisfying. It's like a moment of realization, that sudden realization of "Oh my God, it's actually happening!" That sensation, I have to admit, is truly exhilarating. I'm simply overjoyed that he agreed to be a part of it, and that we were able to infuse some of the essence of the Original Series into the final moments. It really adds that undeniable Star Trek touch.
In a pleasant surprise, Walter Koenig reprised his role as President Chekov in the thrilling finale of season 3 of Star Trek: Picard. This cameo not only delighted fans but also brought back the beloved character of Chekov to the Star Trek universe. Koenig's previous on-screen portrayal of Pavel Chekov in Star Trek: The Original Series concluded with 1994's Star Trek Generations. Subsequently, Anton Yelchin assumed the role and portrayed the young Chekov in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek movies, which were set in the alternate Kelvin Timeline. Sadly, Yelchin tragically passed away in 2016, leaving a void as no one has since taken on the role of Pavel Chekov in Star Trek.
Walter Koenig's portrayal of President Anton Chekov in Star Trek: Picard season 3 serves as a bridge between both iterations of Chekov and pays tribute to the late Anton Yelchin. President Chekov, who mentions "my father," is revealed to be the son of Pavel Chekov, solidifying the Chekov family's influential role in overseeing the entire Federation. In a recent podcast on The 7th Rule, Terry Matalas shared that Walter Koenig visited Todd Stashwick's home, where they, along with Matalas, watched the finale of Star Trek: Picard season 3 together, adding an extra layer of significance to Koenig's cameo appearance. Don't miss the chance to stream Star Trek: Picard season 3 on Paramount+.
