The Beginning of Cathy's Journey
Jack Ryan's love interest, Cathy Mueller, was introduced early on in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, but she curiously disappeared for a couple of more seasons before returning in the final season. John Krasinski stepped into the shoes of the eponymous CIA hero in Amazon Prime Video's take on Clancy's iconic character.

While the series takes creative liberties, it has been mostly loyal to building the core people around Jack in the show. That includes tackling his romantic arc from the get-go, with Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan debuting Abbie Cornish as Jack's girlfriend, Cathy Mueller in season 1. Like Krasinski's Jack Ryan, Cornish follows a small group of actors who previously inhabited the role of Cathy. She has been mostly a significant part of the titular character's arcs, particularly with regard to offering some sort of balance with his fast-paced, dangerous life as a CIA operative.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan immediately established Cathy as a capable individual, who was even involved in Jack's first proper mission in the show. After that, however, she was nowhere to be seen —until the show just casually brought her back in season 4.

Cathy's Role in Season 1 and Absence in Seasons 2 & 3
Cathy became directly involved with the Ebola threat. Jack and Cathy met at his former mentor's party. Despite coming from an affluent family, Cathy has made a name for herself, being a renowned physician specializing in infectious diseases. Despite having an immediate connection to Cathy, the pair's relationship started being quite rocky, primarily because he couldn't divulge any specific information about his job. Ultimately, Jack came clean about it after the CIA called Cathy about a potential bioterrorism threat. This was a great way to effectively establish her character separate from Jack in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan.

As Jack and his team raced through time to deal with the threat of a planned Ebola spread, Cathy became directly involved in the matter as not only did she have prior knowledge of the crisis, but also tasked to keep an eye on the president. This put Cathy in direct danger, as the hospital she worked at, became the target of the terrorists. Ultimately, Jack and the CIA successfully stopped the culprit, with James Greer (Wendell Pierce) coming just in time to save her from a deadly situation.

Throughout both of these missions, Jack was mostly outside of the US, physically separating him from Cathy. This justified her absence in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan seasons 2 and 3. Aside from that, however, it also made sense that Jack didn't involve Cathy in any of his subsequent missions after the threat of an Ebola outbreak. Putting her in danger would likely have taken a toll on him, motivating him to ensure that she wasn't put in such a difficult spot again. So, despite having multiple near-death experiences throughout his experiences in Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan seasons 2 and 3, he may have elected to leave her out of them. In any case, considering Cathy is an established leader in her field, she may have also been busy with her own endeavors.

Cathy's Return in Season 4 and Future
Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan finally brought Cathy back in season 4 as part of its cast. Its storyline started back in Washington DC, which logistically paved the way for Jack and his girlfriend to spend more time together on the screen. Similar to season 1, however, Cathy's life was once again put in danger, as she was directly targeted because of her personal ties to Jack.

After everything, Jack and his team were able to successfully carry out their mission and return home to Washington DC. At the end of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan season 4, Jack and Cathy were still going strong, and if the books are any indication, it's safe to say that they will eventually tie the knot. Unfortunately, with the Amazon Prime Video project now fully wrapped up, that will never play out on the screen.
