Nintendo has created The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to be more than just a game worth playing in 2023. It has the potential to become one of the most talked-about titles on platforms like Twitter. With the introduction of Link's new abilities and an intriguing storyline centered around collecting Dragon's Tears, there is plenty for gamers to discuss in this latest installment of Zelda.
The extent of TOTK's offerings has led Zelda fans to invest a significant amount of time in discovering, creating, and exploring everything the game has to offer. However, amidst their enjoyment of the Breath of the Wild sequel, they have also noticed a few peculiarities in both the current game and its predecessor. With the previous game receiving DLC, there is hope that Tears of the Kingdom's potential DLC packs will address one specific oversight: the absence of the Triforce.
The Legend of Zelda and the Absence of the Triforce
The Triforce holds great significance in the Legend of Zelda series, making appearances in various ways throughout every game. It can be a central goal for Ganondorf, a crucial element of the plot, or a symbol of Hyrule's Kingdom. Both Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, similar to Majora's Mask, showcase the Triforce by featuring it on iconic Hyrulian items, structures, and tapestries.
Although some Zelda games don't heavily rely on the Triforce in their stories, it can be argued that compared to other games in the series, the two major Switch games give it less importance. While clothing, tapestries, and Zelda's use of its power against Calamity Ganon still offer glimpses of the Triforce, there is no explicit mention of it. Additionally, there is no reference to Zelda utilizing its power to defeat Ganon and restore the Master Sword in either game. Consequently, fans are left wondering why the Triforce has taken a more background role in these two titles.
Why Tears of the Kingdom Needs to Fix the Triforce Problem
The Triforce has lost its significance in the current era of the Zelda franchise, except for its appearances in Link's Awakening and Skyward Sword HD. This may leave newer fans unaware of its importance in the rest of the series. It would be logical to have some explanation in these games about the whereabouts of the Triforce and its role in this era of Hyrule, considering its continued prominence. However, even in Tears of the Kingdom, there is no such explanation to be found, at least not yet.
Incorporating the search for the Triforce, whether to harness its power or simply to shed light on its absence, could greatly enhance the storyline of Tears of the Kingdom. Currently, the ending of TOTK leaves something to be desired, as it implies that Ganondorf will eventually return as Demise's vessel, following the cycle of regeneration. While it is unlikely that TOTK will deviate from the cycle established in Skyward Sword, the idea of attempting to break the cycle presents a unique storyline that would be a must-see for Zelda fans. However, as of now, there is no news of DLC for Tears of the Kingdom, so fans will have to wait for future updates from Nintendo.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available on Nintendo Switch.
