Warning: This content contains significant spoilers for both the anime and manga of Demon Slayer. Similar to previous series like Naruto and Bleach, Demon Slayer dives into the darkest moments within shonen anime. Set in a world where demons hide in the shadows of Japan, preying on oblivious humans to inflict unimaginable horror, the show truly lives up to its grim premise with numerous tragic deaths.
Despite their tragic origins, demons are ruthless and formidable beings. At best, they show no concern for the suffering they cause their victims; at worst, they actively seek to make humans suffer under their control. Even among their own kind, with Kibutsuji Muzan leading them, demons show no mercy. This all contributes to Demon Slayer being regarded as one of the most haunting shonen series in recent memory.
10 Kamado Family Massacre
Audiences find out exactly what they’re in for with this show in the very first episode of Demon Slayer, aptly titled "Cruelty."
9 Susamaru’s Death
Tanjiro resides a modest yet content life in the mountains alongside his mother and five younger siblings. However, tragedy strikes when he returns home one day to discover that they have all been mercilessly slaughtered, with the exception of one survivor. Shockingly, Tanjiro's sister, Nezuko, has been transformed into a demon, creating one of the most startling twists in anime history. The sight of Nezuko, newly feral and famished, lunging at her own horrified and bewildered brother, fully determined to rip his throat apart with her teeth, is truly disturbing. As if Tanjiro's day couldn't get any worse, he is compelled to quickly devise a plan to plead with Giyu for his sister's life, all the while defending himself against her relentless attacks.
The extent of Muzan's monstrosity became evident solely through the devastation wrought upon the Kamado house. However, the stringent rules he imposes upon his own forces serve as testament to his utter disregard for the lives of his own kind, his very creations. Tanjiro and Nezuko bore witness to this firsthand when Susamaru inadvertently uttered Muzan's name following her defeat.
Susamaru immediately realizes her mistake and pleads for forgiveness, vehemently affirming her loyalty and commitment to keeping her master's secrets. Despite her honest intentions, her plea proves futile as Muzan's curse takes effect, inflicting a horrifying and agonizing death from within her. This merciless punishment is designed not as a mere switch to end her existence, but rather as a macabre retribution for her slip-up, horrifying the Kamado siblings who had just fought for their lives against the demon.
8 Mount Natagumo Arc
Few demons in Muzan’s possession rival the Spider Family in strength, yet their significance to the show is unparalleled. The realm of Mount Natagumo belongs to them, and witnessing their methodical elimination of the Demon Slayer Corps as they navigate the treacherous forest is akin to scenes from a classic monster film. Each member possesses a uniquely chilling presence, their anatomical features and spider-like abilities manifesting in some of the most terrifying transformations ever depicted in anime.
7 A Ruined Happy Ending
Rui's strength and brutality are unmatched, as he ruthlessly tortures and kills both his "family" and enemies. However, the abilities he possesses are equally formidable. His father possesses the traits of a monstrous creature, equipped with spider fangs and tremendous physical force. Furthermore, his siblings possess the power to transform humans into mindless spiders and encase them in cocoons. Tanjiro and his companions find themselves completely overwhelmed by the sheer power of their adversaries, until the timely arrival of Giyuu and Shinobu.
The Mugen Train arc proves to be an intense and challenging battle for not only Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke but also for Rengoku, the Flame Hashira. They fiercely combat their way through, overcoming alluring illusions and ultimately defeating the Lower Rank demon Enmu. Despite their exhaustion, they rejoice in achieving a mission with zero casualties. However, their celebration is abruptly interrupted when the formidable Upper Rank Akaza appears.
Akaza exemplifies the distinction between the Upper and Lower Ranks of Muzan's Twelve Kizuki without hesitation. Kyojuro engages him in an extraordinary battle that even manages to impress the typically arrogant demon, yet ultimately succumbs to his wounds. The only reprieve for the remaining three is Akaza's abrupt departure before sunrise, leaving them to grieve over one of the most sorrowful deaths in Demon Slayer.
6 Entertainment District Final Battle
Demon Slayer excels in delivering intense battles and heart-wrenching flashbacks that reveal the characters' tragic pasts. This is particularly evident in the Entertainment District Arc, where Daki and Gyutaro, the demon siblings, unveil their dark history. Driven by a childhood marked by relentless mistreatment, they derive pleasure from inflicting torment and death upon those who dare to challenge them.
Their confrontation with the Kamado siblings wreaks havoc on the eponymous district and pushes all four of them to their utmost limits. Nezuko, in particular, loses control, mercilessly pummeling Daki, and even attempting to devour the injured humans entangled in the midst of the chaotic battle. Daki, not one to be underestimated, violently dismembers Nezuko, driving Tanjiro into an even deeper state of fury than audiences have ever witnessed before.
5 Muichirou’s Past
Tanjiro is not the only Demon Slayer who joined the profession after losing loved ones to demon attacks. The Tokito family, however, endures one of the most gruesome fates. The twins, Muichirou and Yuichirou, are left orphaned and fall victim to vicious demon assaults. Muichirou witnesses the harrowing sight of his stronger brother bleeding to death, while desperately begging for Muichirou's survival.
Muichirou's resiliency is truly astonishing. Struggling for days on end, surrounded by a swarm of maggots and insects, he manages to hang on with sheer determination. The horrors he endures leave such a profound impact that his mind shields itself from the memories, causing him to unconsciously adopt his brother's persona as a means of survival. The darkness of Muichirou's past is further intensified by his youth and his relentless pursuit of strength, subjecting himself to even more suffering through rigorous training.
4 Sanemi And Genya’s Past
Both Sanemi and Genya display cruelty and aggression towards Tanjiro. However, it is eventually revealed that the three of them share more similarities than they initially believed. In their childhood, Sanemi and Genya held the roles of the eldest sons in a large family. After their abusive father passed away, they made a solemn oath to protect their mother and siblings. Little did they know, they would face a demon attack, and to their horror, it would be their own mother who had transformed.
Genya's realization of a looming danger, coupled with his futile attempts to prevent his siblings from unlocking the door, invokes a greater sense of terror than witnessing Mama Shinazugawa's rampage and the subsequent massacre of her offspring. Adding to the distress, Sanemi intervenes, slaying the demon and rescuing Genya. However, Genya remains oblivious to the fact that the demon and their own mother were one and the same. This misunderstanding causes a rift between the brothers, transforming their relationship from one of love and closeness, similar to that of the Kamado siblings, into one defined by grief, remorse, and desperation.
3 Obanai’s Past
The Serpent Hashira's childhood is one of the most heartbreaking and tragic in anime, as the victims of demons rarely meet a swift demise. Raised by the Iguro clan, who worshipped a snake demon with a penchant for devouring children, Obanai endured a harrowing existence confined to a prison cell, destined to be an offering. The demon's twisted "love" for him manifested in the form of a slit mouth and relentless night-time stalking, leaving him in a state of constant terror.
Escaping saved his life and simultaneously inflicted upon him even greater trauma. Consumed by outrage, the demon massacred the entire clan, leaving only one surviving cousin who blamed him for evading death. Despite recognizing the wrongs committed by his family, as an adult, Obanai continues to grapple with feelings of self-loathing and guilt stemming from his upbringing and their tragic demise. He firmly believes that the only path to redemption lies in his own demise.
2 Doma
Whenever the Upper Rank Number Two, Doma, appears in the narrative, whether on the page or the screen, a series of horrific events unfold. These events include both the ongoing story and the haunting flashbacks to Doma's tragic past. When Doma was just a child, he was ensnared in a cult that deceived and defrauded innocent people. Furthermore, he was forced to bear witness to the tragic murder-suicide of his own parents, an experience that profoundly affected his demeanor and interactions with others throughout his life as a demon.
1 Tanjiro’s Transformation
Doma, in his demonic form, personally consumed both Inosuke's mother as well as Shinobu and Kanao's sister. He holds his cult in high regard, viewing it as an honor and assistance to be either absorbed or transformed by him. The satisfaction brought by the Kochou sisters' victory over him is diminished by the fact that Doma remains indifferent towards his impending demise. Life, including his own, holds little significance to him.
The transformation of anime heroes into villains is truly astonishing, especially when it occurs against their own desire. Muzan, driven by vengeance against the humans who put an end to his reign, forcefully imposes his will upon Tanjiro, subsequently turning him into a demon. Witnessing the once calm and kind Tanjiro now adorned with burning red eyes and a sinister snarl is undeniably one of the manga's most shocking moments.
Tanjiro, despite his willingness to kill, fights not only to protect others but also to grant demons a peaceful end with his sword. However, his corruption, following his role as a perpetual beacon of hope and the deaths of numerous Demon Slayers, marks the series' most harrowing moment. Although he possesses great strength, Tanjiro alone cannot suppress Muzan. Instead, it is the collective power of his loved ones coming together to shield him that illuminates the darkness and ultimately eliminates Muzan.
In order for Demon Slayer to effectively convey its optimistic message, it must confront significant darkness to provide a stark contrast. The series delves into nightmarish horrors such as horrifying transformations, traumatic childhoods, and the brutal slaughtering of demons, showcasing the bleakest moments within the narrative.
