Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Secret Invasion.
Marvel's Phase 5 streaming series, Secret Invasion, has been released, and its premiere poses a potentially challenging situation for Wakanda and its reputation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After years of being a secondary character in other people's stories, Secret Invasion finally puts the spotlight on former Director of SHIELD, Nick Fury. Since his absence from the MCU (aside from a voice role in What If...?) during Phase 3, Fury makes his long-awaited return to Earth in Secret Invasion, following his time on the S.A.B.E.R. space station.
Secret Invasion unveils a thrilling continuation of the narrative established in Captain Marvel. Despite decades of waiting for a promised new planet, certain Skrulls resort to their remarkable shape-shifting abilities, strategically infiltrating influential positions across Earth, all while orchestrating a global coup. Anticipate an intriguing ensemble of fresh and familiar characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Secret Invasion. However, the appearance of a particular individual from the very first episode of Secret Invasion could retrospectively pose a significant predicament for Wakanda's esteemed reputation.
Everett Ross' Skrull Replacement Makes Wakanda's Security Look Terrible
Secret Invasion starts with Agent Everett Ross participating in a covert meeting, where another agent suggests a theory regarding an international conspiracy involving a massive infiltration of Skrulls. After vowing to inform Fury and engaging in a thrilling pursuit, Ross tragically dies, only to be immediately unmasked as a disguised Skrull. It remains uncertain how long Ross has been a Skrull in the MCU prior to the events of Secret Invasion, but this revelation could potentially expose vulnerabilities within Wakanda.
The Skrulls' agenda for global dominance revolves around extensively infiltrating various sectors such as governments and entertainment conglomerates by strategically placing their agents over the course of several years. Hence, it is plausible to consider the possibility that Ross might have been a Skrull since his initial appearance in Black Panther. Even if the Wakandans were unaware of the existence of Skrulls, the fact that a potential Skrull managed to penetrate the most highly secured areas of the nation without being detected during Shuri's thorough medical examination and state-of-the-art equipment is a concerning reflection on Wakanda's overall security measures.
Secret Invasion Must Explain Agent Ross' Impostor To Solve The Issue
As the Secret Invasion storyline progresses, more characters are likely to be unveiled as Skrulls. With each revelation, more details about the duration of their Skrull identity in the MCU will emerge. While it remains a possibility that Ross will be confirmed as an imposter for a substantial period, it is equally plausible that his appearance in Secret Invasion marks the adoption of a new facade. This approach would provide greater logical consistency to his previous on-screen appearances, particularly considering his extensive portrayal as a peacekeeper.
