Caution! This post includes spoilers for episode 3 of Marvel's Secret Invasion.
In episode 3 of Marvel's Secret Invasion, an important moment unveils the extraordinary abilities of Gravik, the new Skrull General in the MCU who aims to conquer Earth. Gravik is resolute in his mission to incite a war between the United States and Russia, igniting WWIII. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that Gravik has devised strategies to confront Earth's formidable heroes, including the Avengers. Consequently, Gravik has already acquired remarkable powers as the MCU's inaugural Super-Skrull.
In Secret Invasion episode 3, the exuberant Gravik (played by Kingsley Benn-Adir) revels in his newfound role as Skrull General. Bestowed with complete authority by the Skrull Council, he relishes the opportunity to execute bold moves against humanity, forcefully seizing control of Earth. One such move is his ambitious Super-Skrull project, an effective countermeasure against the multitude of powered individuals who pose the greatest threat to the shape-shifting alien race. No longer willing to wait for unfulfilled promises from the aging Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), Gravik demonstrates the extent of his progress in conquering Earth through a pivotal encounter with Talos (Ben Mendelsohn), Fury's sole remaining Skrull ally.
How Gravik’s Hand Healed
After a tumultuous face-to-face "parley" between Gravik and Talos, the encounter escalates dramatically when Talos thrusts a knife into Gravik's hand. Astonishingly, in the aftermath of Talos' departure, the resilient Skrull general effortlessly withdraws his hand from the lethal blade. As if defying all odds, his hand emanates an intense and incandescent orange glow, swiftly restoring itself. This spectacular manifestation undoubtedly establishes Gravik's remarkable newly-acquired abilities, unequivocally affirming his possession of Extremis within his very being.
Gravik Is Already The MCU’s Super-Skrull
: In the movie Iron Man 3 released in 2013, Extremis, a nanotech-based genetic manipulation technique, was featured. This innovative procedure enabled the human body to utilize its own bioelectricity more efficiently, resulting in accelerated healing abilities, including the regeneration of lost limbs. Additionally, Extremis provided remarkable physical enhancements and the capacity to generate "fire-type" exothermic abilities. Although there were potential risks of overloading and explosive consequences, there have been recent occurrences of individuals with Extremis powers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, such as in the film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The latest revelation in Secret Invasion acknowledges that Gravik possesses his own set of Extremis powers, which was hinted at with the introduction of a sample in the show's second episode.Gravik's utilization of Extremis demonstrates his willingness to undergo the experiments conducted at his base, known as "New Skrullos". Operated by Dr. Rose Dalton and her husband, Gravik confirms in Secret Invasion episode 3 that his objective is to transform all Skrulls into Super-Skrulls, resembling the distinct group of shape-shifting extraterrestrials in the original comics' rendition of Secret Invasion. Gravik asserts, "No longer shall we alter our appearances, but our abilities. We shall evolve as purpose-built instruments of mass destruction. Every one of us will become Super-Skrulls."
It is currently unknown if there are other Skrulls who have also gained superpowers. It is possible that Gravik was the first to become a Super-Skrull and decided to test the procedure on himself before others. Regardless, the fact that Gravik has acquired powers is concerning. This will make it even more difficult for Fury and Talos to stop him, especially if he plans to give all Skrulls powers beyond their natural ability to shape-shift and blend in.
Similar to the comics, Super-Skrulls were specifically designed to mimic and counter the abilities of Marvel superheroes. This suggests that the Skrulls' power level is only limited by the DNA samples they can gather. However, there might be an unknown drawback to the procedure that has yet to be revealed in the episodes of Secret Invasion that have been released so far.
Gravik’s Other Secret Powers Explained
Following Episode 3 of Secret Invasion, Gravik has only been confirmed to possess Extremis as his power. However, promos for the upcoming MCU show suggest that he will also acquire stretching abilities from Groot's DNA, which was hinted at in Episode 2. In addition, the Skrulls possess other confirmed DNA samples, such as Cull Obsidian's severed hand, which is likely to grant strength and durability to a Skrull, as well as the head of a Frost Beast from Jotunheim, which will probably provide ice-generating abilities.
It appears that Gravik has all the necessary elements to resemble Marvel Comics' Kl'rt, the original Super-Skrull who possessed powers similar to those of The Fantastic Four (who have yet to make an appearance in the MCU). However, only time will reveal if there is a limit to the number of powers a Skrull can possess in the MCU, or if there are any drawbacks in general. Hopefully, Fury and Talos will discover how to counter Gravik's new abilities as Secret Invasion progresses.
