Highlights
Blasphemous 2 introduces figure carvings that players can equip that have overarching effects on gameplay and the narrative, similar to Bloodborne's Caryll runes.
In the City of the Blessed Name, players can slot figures at the sculptor to unlock altarpiece slots. These slots enable players to equip attribute buffs and enhance gameplay.
In Blasphemous 2, figures can be customized to suit various playstyles, offering specific buffs and improving abilities. These figures are essential for attaining the game's second ending.
Blasphemous 2 introduces a range of new features that set it apart from its predecessor and provide a strong foundation for future sequels. The integration of platforming with other mechanics has improved significantly, resulting in a more fluid gameplay experience. With the addition of a greater variety of traversal-based weapons, the possibilities for what a sequel could achieve are boundless.
One particularly intriguing addition in Blasphemous 2 is the introduction of figure carvings. These carvings can be equipped by players and have significant effects on both gameplay and the narrative. Players can slot figures at any Prie Dieu, although they will most commonly be slotted at the sculptor located in the City of the Blessed Name. Additionally, players have the option to trade Marks of Martyrdom with the sculptor to unlock more altarpiece slots.
Embarking on the engaging questline involving the sculptor, Montanes, is highly rewarding as it enables players to unlock all altarpiece slots. This, in turn, allows players to equip more attribute buffs and enhancements to their gameplay. Ultimately, this mechanic creates a sense of excitement similar to that found in Bloodborne's Caryll runes.
Blasphemous 2’s Figures Help Tailor a Playstyle
Acquiring and slotting additional figures may require time, but the effort is worthwhile. By tailoring various figures to different slots in the altarpiece, players can select specific figures that complement their preferred playstyle. For instance, players who enjoy the range and damage output of Blasphemous 2's Veredicto would greatly benefit from equipping The Scribe, which boosts fervour generation from attacks by 5%, and The Anointed One, which enhances the weapon's damage by 15%.
Figures are also valuable in Blasphemous 2 because locating the NPC who can unlock new rosary bead knot slots can be time-consuming. While beads are essential for resistances with stackable percentages, figures can temporarily enhance the Penitent One's abilities when combined with a particular playstyle or build.
Bloodborne’s Runes Can Be Largely Forgettable
Bloodborne’s runes provide passive buffs to specific stats, with weapon buffs obtained through uniquely shaped gems being the most significant. These runes can be difficult to locate or locked behind questlines and bosses in a cold playthrough, making them highly valuable in New Game Plus.
In contrast, Blasphemous 2 does not currently have a New Game Plus mode, meaning all progress and ambitions are limited to single playthroughs. This explains why a game like Bloodborne, with its multiple playthroughs, offers a wealth of content. Additionally, Oath runes in Bloodborne function independently, connected to Covenants to align players with factions and grant them buffs or adaptations in summoning/co-op.
Blasphemous 2 introduces unique figures that initially appear as different items but can be transformed into proper figures within the city. These figures serve as enjoyable rewards for completing quests, requiring players to have them sculpted before they can be equipped. This becomes especially crucial for players aiming to achieve the non-default ending of the sequel's narrative. In order to reach Ending A, players must equip four specific figures in particular locations, making them essential for unlocking the secret ending. Blasphemous 2 is available on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
