Warning: This article contains spoilers for episode 4 of Secret Invasion, titled "Beloved."
In a groundbreaking move, Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion episode 4 sets the stage for the introduction of the Thunderbolts in Phase 5 of the MCU. This pivotal moment also foreshadows the emergence of the Red Hulk. Departing from the lighthearted tone of previous projects, Secret Invasion delves into themes of paranoia and espionage as Nick Fury returns to Earth to confront a faction of shape-shifting Skrulls. The series has been filled with shocking plot twists and revelations, including the heartbreaking loss of beloved characters from the MCU and the exposure of prominent heroes disguised as Skrulls. These developments have the potential to dramatically alter the future of the MCU.
Secret Invasion Sets Up President Ritson's Fall
is the fourth episode of Secret Invasion titled "Beloved." In addition to delving into Nick Fury's background, this episode sheds light on the character of Ritson, played by Dermot Mulroney, who currently holds the position of President of the United States in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). We find out that Ritson closely collaborates with Air Force Colonel James "Rhodey" Rhodes, portrayed by Don Cheadle since the film Iron Man 2 in 2010. However, the biggest revelation in Secret Invasion episode 4 is the shocking discovery that Rhodey is actually the Skrull named Raava. It remains uncertain how long Raava has been impersonating War Machine, but her presence in Secret Invasion offers insight into an intriguing future plotline: the emergence of General Ross as President and the introduction of the Thunderbolts in the MCU.Unlike previous MCU films, where only President Matthew Ellis from Iron Man 3 made an appearance, the role of the United States President has become more prominent in the upcoming Phase 5. Actor Harrison Ford has been confirmed to portray President Ross in Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, taking over from the late William Hurt. This means that President Ritson's time in office will be short-lived. It is possible that Ritson's term is ending, allowing for Ross to be elected through official channels. However, the events of Secret Invasion episode 4 clearly indicate that Ritson's fall from grace is imminent.
Rhodey's Skrull Reveal Sets Up General Ross' Rise To President
During the events of "Beloved," President Ritson's stagecoach came under attack from Gravik and his rebel Skrulls, who cleverly disguised themselves as Russian soldiers. Their primary goal was to assassinate the President and trigger a catastrophic World War III. Fortunately, Nick Fury and Talos intervened just in time to rescue Ritson. However, this startling attack has served as a wake-up call for Ritson, revealing that his own administration has been infiltrated by Skrulls. Consequently, this revelation threatens to erode the trust and confidence of both his staff and the public in Ritson's leadership. Given the precarious state of the world, teetering on the brink of war under Ritson's administration, it is highly probable that unless he willingly relinquishes the presidency, the public will eventually expose Ritson once they become aware of the Skrull infiltration.
With the Skrull invasion going public, President Ritson's trustworthiness may suffer as paranoia spreads across the globe. Consequently, a reliable and experienced candidate should step up to the plate, and it is General Thaddeus Ross who possesses unparalleled expertise in dealing with superpowered individuals within the US government. Initially introduced in The Incredible Hulk as an Army General relentlessly pursuing Bruce Banner (aka the Hulk), Ross later emerged as the Secretary of State in Captain America: Civil War. His confident approach in implementing the controversial Sokovia Accords showcased his resolute character.
Once Ritson's administration crumbles, Ross' extensive experience makes him the ideal candidate to assume the position of United States President, shedding light on one of the greatest enigmas of the MCU's Phase 5. The confirmation of Harrison Ford being cast as President Ross prior to the premiere of Secret Invasion inadvertently spoiled the impending end of President Ritson's tenure. Nonetheless, Secret Invasion has begun unraveling the intricate web that will lead to this turn of events, potentially resulting in gripping moments as the public potentially removes Ritson from power and embraces Ross with open arms - unless the former meets an untimely demise during Secret Invasion.
Why The Thunderbolts Will Replace The Avengers After Secret Invasion
At SDCC 2022, Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige confirmed the inclusion of the Thunderbolts in the MCU during Phase 5, leading to speculation on the formation of this antihero team. Secret Invasion might provide the answer. If public trust in superheroes wavers due to War Machine being exposed as a Skrull, the Thunderbolts could step in to replace the Avengers. This revelation may result in the reintroduction of the Sokovia Accords or a similar superhero registration, making a government-sponsored team like the Thunderbolts a logical choice.
This also sets the stage for one of the most highly-anticipated storylines in the MCU: the possibility of President Ross becoming the Red Hulk in Phase 5. Ross has previously mentioned his health issues, which could hinder his success as President, especially during a turbulent time. To safeguard his health and the nation, he may transform himself into the Red Hulk, much like in the Marvel Comics. Therefore, Secret Invasion episode 4 potentially clarifies some of the MCU's upcoming storylines that were previously perplexing.
